The Revival Defeat Johnny Gargano, Tommaso Ciampa at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II

Mike ChiariAug 20, 2016

The Revival successfully retained their NXT Tag Team Championships Saturday night, as they defeated Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn II.

Dash Wilder and Scott Dawson used their resourcefulness to keep the belts. They took Ciampa out of the equation, and Wilder forced Gargano to tap out after chopping his knee.

It initially looked as though Gargano and Ciampa had won the titles when the referee counted three with Gargano atop Wilder. But Wilder's ring awareness saved the day when he put his foot on the ropes, as seen in this GIF courtesy of WWE NXT:

Wilder and Dawson became the first two-time NXT Tag Team champions ever when they beat American Alpha at NXT TakeOver: The End, but they had targets on their backs immediately thereafter.

Just prior to recapturing the titles, The Revival lost a match to Gargano and Ciampa, which prompted the Cruiserweight Classic competitors to insist that they were deserving of a shot at the belts.

Dash and Dawson talked their way out of further encounters with Gargano and Ciampa and did everything possible to avoid putting the titles on the line against them. But NXT general manager William Regal eventually announced the highly anticipated match.

Once Gargano and Ciampa were officially installed as No. 1 contenders, Ciampa vowed to take the NXT Tag Team Championships from The Revival:

Dawson was equally confident, though, and he pointed toward The Revival's impressive track record of success in terms of beating many of the best teams to go through NXT:

With wins over American Alpha as well as Enzo Amore and Big Cass, Dawson's outlook was understandable, despite the success Gargano and Ciampa enjoyed against the champs entering TakeOver: Brooklyn II.

In addition to combating Gargano and Ciampa, The Revival was also forced to battle the rowdy crowd at the Barclays Center. The fans in attendance were firmly behind the challengers.

It was a familiar atmosphere for Dash and Dawson, considering the popularity of many of their past opponents, which may have allowed them to handle it better than most.

Perhaps their experience in that regard came into play, as they once again managed to retain their titles and vanquish a duo that had a ton of momentum on its side entering TakeOver: Brooklyn II.

With the win, The Revival arguably cemented their status as the most successful tag team to ever grace an NXT ring.

NXT is short on tag teams currently, with TM61 and the Authors of Pain standing out as the only potential contenders for The Revival in the near future. With that in mind, Dash and Dawson could be in line to break The Ascension's record for the most days spent as NXT Tag Team champions.
