WWE SmackDown Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from August 16

Erik BeastonAug 17, 2016

With a single superkick, Dolph Ziggler became the biggest winner from Tuesday's episode of SmackDown, sending a loud and clear message to WWE champion Dean Ambrose ahead of their title clash this Sunday at SummerSlam.

There was nothing showy or flashy about the two-time world champion as he interrupted Miz TV featuring Ambrose, nor should there have been. A week after his Lunatic Fringe tag partner laid him out with Dirty Deeds following a victory over Bray Wyatt and Erick Rowan, Ziggler made a beeline for the ring and aired his grievances with his rival.

After implying that Ambrose will empty his arsenal trying to defeat him in Brooklyn, New York, Ziggler laid Ambrose out, demonstrating just how dangerous his superkick is and how quickly it could spell the end of the champion's reign.

The passion shown by Ziggler during his promo felt real. In an industry where Superstars overact and come across as unreal, The Showoff brought a realism to his promo that sold fans on his determination to leave Barclays Center with the top prize in the industry and, in the process, helped elevate the final sales pitch for the encounter beyond the typical in-ring interview segment.

Winner: Eva Marie

The Red Queen again found a way out of competition Tuesday night, drawing big heat while continuing to establish herself as the lead heel in the women's division.

A narcissist who enters arenas to a grand introduction but has no business sharing the squared circle with the likes of Becky Lynch, Natalya or Naomi, Eva Marie has developed into a great villain thanks to a little focused booking, excellent facial expressions and body language. It also helps that there's a passionate dislike for her by those fans who believe she has no place in the industry.

Those ingredients make for one of the most enjoyable characters on SmackDown, a female Superstar whose ability to be one of the premier characters on the blue brand has become apparent to fans.

Don't believe it? Take a listen to the reaction she garnered upon her arrival during the tag match, one of the loudest of the night, and argue that her push to this point is not working.

Losers: All Tag Teams Not Named American Alpha

Without a shadow of doubt, the biggest weakness of the SmackDown brand is its tag team division. That weakness can be attributed to the fact that WWE Creative has done a poor job of presenting anyone but American Alpha as stars.

The Usos are already established, but their characters are stagnant. The Hype Bros, The Vaudevillains and The Ascension have been woefully misused, while Breezango is still relatively in its infancy.

WWE has made a big deal of Jason Jordan and Chad Gable. They are former amateur stars whose in-ring explosiveness is undeniable and whose charisma is in abundance. Yet they are only as good as their competition, and right now, that competition is nonexistent.

In order to put Gable and Jordan over as the greatest team in wrestling today, SmackDown's writing staff must put more emphasis on building the other Superstars within the division so that fans take it seriously.

Winners: John Cena and AJ Styles

After not appearing on last week's show at all, Cena and Styles laid the final bit of groundwork for their SummerSlam bout with an angle that made their contest on Sunday appear as important as any other bout on the card.

Styles' scathing promo and Cena's Attitude Adjustment on his rival—through the announce table, no less—put an exclamation point on the brand's final hype for SummerSlam. As great as the story between Ziggler and Ambrose has been to this point, there is no denying the fact that Styles-Cena feels like a legitimate pay-per-view main event, regardless of the lack of stakes.

Their previous matches have been something truly special to behold, and at SummerSlam, without the likelihood of Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson to interfere in the proceedings, the industry icons should deliver that five-star affair fans know they can.
