Why Finn Balor's Demon Character Must Beat Seth Rollins at WWE SummerSlam 2016

Donald WoodAug 15, 2016

At the 2016 edition of SummerSlam, Finn Balor and his Demon King character must beat Seth Rollins to become the first man to ever hold the WWE Universal Championship.

On Monday’s episode of Raw, Balor debuted his Demon King character and entrance just six days before the company’s second-largest pay-per-view. While many pundits will claim WWE should have saved the epic moment for SummerSlam, the crowd’s lukewarm reaction proves the company was smart to acclimate the audience before Sunday’s event.

Now that the fans know what to expect and will hear the Brooklyn, New York, crowd lose its mind for the Demon King, WWE will be anticipating that Balor receives one of the biggest reactions of any Superstar in the company.

The reason Balor will get huge ovations is because of the aura he and the character carry. With the entrance and the otherworldly Demon King alter ego, Balor could be this generation’s Undertaker with the proper booking.

With that aura in mind, the last decision WWE officials should make at SummerSlam is to already hand the demon his first loss.

Building a true aura in wrestling consists of having an element of invincibility, and the Demon King losing to Rollins at SummerSlam would instantly damage his credibility with the casual wrestling fans.

The casual wrestling fans are the key. The company knows most hardcore members of the WWE Universe already love what Balor has done in NXT and New Japan Pro Wrestling, but the main focus now is getting people who don’t know much about him to fall in love with his character.

The more credibility Balor gains by beating Rollins and becoming the first-ever WWE universal champion, the more merchandise WWE can sell on its websites and at live events.

As for the WWE Universal Championship, not only would Balor winning the title give him instant credibility, but the victory would also give the title immense importance due to the Demon King’s debut becoming synonymous with the debut of the new belt.

Every highlight film moving forward associated with the WWE Universal Championship would also feature Balor as the first-ever champion.

For those worried about Rollins, a loss on Sunday wouldn’t hurt his character at all. In fact, Rollins taking a defeat at SummerSlam would only add fuel to his weasel-heel persona and amplify how much he whines. Fans love to hate Rollins, and Balor beating him as the Demon King would result in a plethora of excuses.

At SummerSlam, all signs point to Balor and the Demon King character coming out on top.

For his sake and the long-term credibility of the aura he has built before arriving on the main roster, the Demon King must walk away victorious.
