Tyler ConwayJul 28, 2016

Three rounds into the 2016 Rogers Cup, things are looking awfully good for the top players in the field.

Novak Djokovic, Angelique Kerber and Stan Wawrinka moved their way into the quarterfinals Thursday, though it wasn't a complete breeze for the latter two.

Kerber dropped her first set against Elina Svitolina before winning a match-saving tiebreak in the second and pulling out the third for a 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 triumph. Wawrinka needed a tiebreak in the first set before breezing in the second to complete a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win over Jack Sock.

Djokovic, though, is still pretty awesome at tennis.

The world No. 1, playing in prime time, looked unfazed by his Wimbledon ouster or his second-round struggles against Gilles Muller on Tuesday.

He needed less than an hour-and-a-half to earn a 6-2, 6-4 win over Radek Stepanek on Thursday, overcoming five aces with his own excellent service game. Stepanek broke Djokovic just once and won only 12 return points overall.

Tennis writer Ricky Dimon captured the good-natured rivalry between Djokovic and Stepanek:

Djokovic spoke about his approach after the match, per Agence France-Presse (via the Times of India):

"

I just wanted to focus on each point and not allow him to go up a break again. There were a lot of close games, it could have gone a different way in the second set.

I was fortunate to stay tough. Conditions here are very quick, It's not easy to break serve, plus Radek takes away a lot of your time with his angled returns.

"

Djokovic moved on to play No. 5 seed Tomas Berdych, who was victorious in three sets over Ryan Harrison on Thursday. Berdych scored 19 aces in the hard-fought match, which saw him win just eight more points overall than the 24-year-old qualifier.

While the upsets were few in Round 3, the ones that happened were notable. Madison Keys took down Venus Williams in three sets, at one point winning seven straight games. Keys will take on 16th-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who earned a 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-1 win over Agnieszka Radwanska.

"I think I'm still recovering from the second set," Pavlyuchenkova said, per the Associated Press (via ESPN.com). "Basically, I thought I had the match in my pocket and lost it, so I'm happy with the mental side."

The men's side saw unseeded Kevin Anderson take down No. 12 Bernard Tomic after dropping the first set with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory. Anderson will face the second-seeded Wawrinka, who has lost four of his last five against the South African.

“It's going to be an interesting match. ... It's always been difficult to beat him, but hopefully I can do that tomorrow,” Wawrinka said, per the ATP World Tour's official website.

Gael Monfils also pulled off a slight upset of seventh-seeded David Goffin. The No. 10 seed has Milos Raonic up next. Raonic had no trouble earning a win over 19-year-old Jared Donaldson.
