T-Wolves Not Seeking Rubio Trade

On Sunday, Sid Hartman of the Star Tribune reported Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor, who was in Las Vegas for the NBA board of governors meeting, said he doesn't see dealing Rubio "as a likely possibility."

Taylor noted the team wants Rubio to improve his shooting. "But his other things, he plays defense, he gets assists, he helps the others get better. He has some wonderful qualities," he added.

Rubio's spot on Minnesota's roster became murky after the team drafted Kris Dunn with the fifth overall pick in June's draft. The former Providence star, who is also a point guard, drew a rave review from Sports Illustrated's Rob Mahoney for his brief summer-league performance:

Dunn was pulled from action after a hard move toward the basket later triggered concussion symptoms. Still he made the bucket on the play responsible, powering his way up and through a bigger defender. It’s fair to be skeptical of Dunn’s jumper until he proves his range as a pro. What should tide him over is his strength, physicality, and persistence on both sides of the ball.

Rubio is not without talent, though. The 25-year-old has averaged 10.1 points and 8.3 assists per contest in 278 career NBA games, though he hasn't shot better than 38.1 percent from the field in a season.

Thibodeau is walking into Minnesota without any attachment to Rubio. He is going to put the best lineup on the court for a young and talented Timberwolves roster that includes the last two Rookies of the Year: Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns.

Rubio has three years remaining on a contract extension he signed in November 2014. He's a dynamic passer who can help his teammates find easier shots, but his limitations would make it hard for the Timberwolves to get enough in return to make a potential deal worth it.
