Wimbledon 2016: Saturday London Schedule and Bracket Predictions

Rob BlanchetteJul 8, 2016

Serena Williams is hoping to earn the 22nd Grand Slam title of her career on Saturday—but she must navigate past Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber at Wimbledon 2016 in London.

The skillful German defeated the American icon in the most recent final Down Under and has gone from strength to strength on grass at SW19.

Williams dropped only two games in her semi-final against Elena Vesnina, winning 6-2, 6-0, as Kerber tamed the supreme experience of Venus Williams in the last four, prevailing 6-4, 6-4 to deny an all-family final.

Preview And Prediction

It would be wrong to assume Williams has lost the knack of winning Grand Slam finals, but she has been knocking on the door for title No. 22 for a longer-than-desired period.

Kerber is one of the players who have disappointed her on a court recently, and the powerful German can once again be her nemesis on Saturday afternoon.

However, there is a different set of circumstances at play here at Wimbledon than previously in Australia and France—Williams is in electric form.

The American looks fit and motivated after sluggish spells at Roland Garros and the Aussie Open. Kerber is also at the top of her game, defeating sister Venus with plenty left in the tank.

Kerber has an enviable all-around game—but on her best day, Williams is untouchable at the summit of tennis.

Vesnina was not expected to trouble the reigning Wimbledon champ in their semi-final battle—and she didn't—but the scale of the victory was impressive. Kerber will have noted the look of steel in her opponent's eye which wasn't present in the final in Australia.

The German fourth seed has performed to an optimum in London, as she controlled the guile of Simona Halep in the last eight.

Yet even at the top of her performance value, it appears difficult for her to repeat her shortest of winning runs against Williams in Grand Slam events, if the American arrives to do business.

BBC 5 live Sport's Russell Fuller lauded the reigning champion ahead of the final but said Kerber is the opponent he wanted to battle Williams on Saturday:

Kerber has been relaxed ahead of the grass-court showcase event, and said she wants to test herself against the level which Williams provides, per Jacob Steinberg of the Guardian:

"

It’s always tough to play against players like this. I will try to go in my own way, not thinking too much about the history of my opponents. It’s a new day, a new match.

It’s important to give everything I could this day. I’m going out there to win the matches, playing my game, not thinking too much.

"

Kerber is the one player at Wimbledon who could match Williams depending on the surface. However, because the No. 1 seed has been waiting for her 22nd Grand Slam, it is unlikely she will be below par in any capacity or form.

The German has played world-class tennis since arriving in England for the challenge, but Williams will be the overwhelming favourite at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The greatest female tennis player of all time has rarely looked as aggressive in recent memory, and she will want to make a statement against a player who is six years her junior in one of her favourite global competitions.
