Match Preview

Raonic should head into the final riding a wave of momentum. The big-hitting Canadian won the fourth and fifth sets of his semifinal against Federer on Friday to earn the opportunity to play for the title.

Most impressively, he showed no sign of late-match jitters while closing it out.

Early in the tournament, it became clear he was still in the process of making adjustments to his approach on grass. He showed a greater desire to come forward with hope of winning some easier points rather than relying solely on his power to hit through opponents.

The results were a bit shaky at the outset. He won just 57 percent of his net points in Round 1 against Pablo Carreno Busta. But it was already evident that he'd become a legitimate threat if he could iron out the issues before the second week, and that's exactly what happened.

Part of that success is due to the serve and volley. Craig O'Shannessy of Brain Game Tennis provided numbers that showcase both Raonic's increased use of the tactic and its success rate:

Furthermore, the 25-year-old budding star stated after his marathon victory over Federer that getting to work with two former players who have gone through these type of situations has helped him on the mental side of things, per Piers Newbery of BBC Sport.

"What [John McEnroe] told me was to go out and leave it all out there," Raonic said. "I showed a lot of emotion, always positive. Mentally I had one of my best matches of my career. He gave me plenty that helped today, so did Carlos Moya. I hope they have a lot more to give me."

Murray needed far less drama to punch his ticket to the final. He cruised past Tomas Berdych in three routine sets to avoid another extended stay on court after needing five sets to beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

That should ensure he's fresh for the final.

The 2013 Wimbledon champion, who tallied 20 winners with just nine unforced errors in Friday's win, stated afterward that he understands the importance of seizing these chances whenever they arise, as noted by Jacob Steinberg of the Guardian:

"

The older you get you never know how many chances you're going to get to play in grand slam finals so you want to make the most of your opportunities. I mean you learn from those matches, having had those experiences in the past, playing against some of the best players of all time. I need to play a great match on Sunday if I want to win.

"

The championship combatants aren't strangers. They have faced off nine times before, with Murray holding the 6-3 edge. That includes a recent meeting at Queen's Club, a Wimbledon warm-up event, that saw Raonic win the first set before Murray stormed back to win.

All told, Sunday's clash is the ultimate litmus test for Raonic's revamped offensive approach. He's always possessed the power to compete with the sport's top players. Now everybody finds out whether he's added enough variety to take down an elite opponent on perhaps tennis' biggest stage.

Expect numerous twists and turns along the way to finding out the answer.

With that said, Murray is coming off an outstanding showing against Berdych, and that formalong with the crowd and his Grand Slam final experiencegives him a slight edge.

Prediction: Murray in five sets
