Andy Murray vs. Liam Broady: Score and Reaction from 2016 Wimbledon

Rory MarsdenJun 28, 2016

Andy Murray looked impressive on Tuesday, as he beat fellow Brit Liam Broady 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 in his first-round match at Wimbledon 2016.

The 2013 champion is aiming for a second SW19 title in 2016 and will face Taiwan's Lu Yen-hsun in the second round after seeing off the challenge of Broady in just over 100 minutes.

Playing second on Centre Court at Wimbledon on Tuesday, Murray said before the encounter that his compatriot, Broady, had "an opportunity" to compete on "one of the biggest courts in the world with a huge audience and try to cause an upset," per BBC Sport.

But, in truth, the world No. 235 had little cause for optimism during the encounter, as Murray executed his serve particularly well and broke early in each set.

The pair was greeted warmly by the Centre Court crowd, per Wimbledon:

A brutally efficient opening service game from Murray set the tone—wrapped up with the most delicate of drop shots.

The Scot then broke Broady at the first time of asking and moved 3-0 ahead with another service hold to love.

Broady, 22, finally got on the board in the fourth game of the match, but after another simple hold from Murray, the Olympic gold medalist was two games from the opener in no time, per bwin:

At 5-2 ahead, Murray set up two set points with a crushing backhand return into the corner, and he took the first of them to seal the opener.

BBC Tennis provided the first set statistics, which was proof of Murray's incredible dominance on serve:

The second set followed a similar pattern. Murray held impeccably early on and broke again for a 3-1 lead.

Broady survived a 21-shot rally in the fourth game for 15-0, but Murray then produced three excellent points in a row to earn two break points, and his opponent double-faulted to hand him the initiative.

It was then Broady's turn to try and break back, and he did well to get to 0-30 on Murray's serve in the seventh game, but the second seed hauled it back to deuce and then crushed a backhand to go 5-2 clear.

Serving for the set at 5-3, Murray again was impeccable, with an excellent volley and sliced backhand putting him two sets up inside an hour, per BBC Tennis:

There was no let up for Broady, as he conceded a break point in the first game of the third set, and Murray made no mistake with a tight overhead backhand to go 1-0 up.

Broady was then 0-30 down in his second service game of the third set but did well to hold for 2-1.

It was a struggle for the young Brit, though, as he continued to earn no chances on Murray's serve while labouring every time to hold and stay in touch.

At 3-1 down, he again did well to save three break points—the third with a brilliant forehand down the line—and hold for 3-2.

Broady then finally got his first break points of the match, only to see them snatched away as Murray's strength and athleticism won him four points in a row for a 4-2 lead.

The result of the match had looked inevitable for some time, and it took Murray just another pair of holds to see himself through to the second round with ease.

Broady made his illustrious opponent work hard to earn match point before the Scot finished with a delicate drop shot after following up on a huge cross-court forehand.
