Wimbledon 2016: Best and Worst Dressed in London

Merlisa Lawrence CorbettJul 3, 2016

Fashion became a prominent storyline of Wimbledon 2016 before the tournament even started, with dresses designed by Nike drawing "player complaints about the cut of the dress and the way its billowing impedes performance," according to the Telegraph.

After a few alterations, the dresses still landed on the list of worst outfits at this year's tournament.

On CNN.com, tennis writer Ravi Ubha wrote that, "the dress draws comparisons to a short, flimsy piece of nightwear, something more appropriate for use behind closed doors than on a tennis court."

Sheer and flimsy, these dresses fall on the wrong side of the line between daring and distasteful. Yet even some of the girls participating in the Wimbledon juniors tournament wore the dresses.

Luckily, for Nike, its most notable female star at Wimbledon, Serena Williams, wore something different. She's among the best dressed.

Nike made a mistake with the floaty frocks. Yet it wasn't as big a misstep as the Adidas' French Open Zebra fiasco. Still, the dresses dominated the headlines about who wore what at the All England Club.

Honorable Mentions Best: Elena Vesnina and Andrea Petkovic

Elena Vesnina wore a classically cut Lacoste tennis dress. Also worn by Dominica Cibulkova and Alize Cornet, this dress will never go out of style. It's simple, flattering and elegant.

Andrea Petkovic's Adidas Stella McCartney Barricade PrimeKnit kit provides a contemporary take on the basic tennis dress. Garbine Muguruza, Simona Halep and Ana Ivanovic wore versions of this ensemble.

Best: Donald Young

The lime-green accents on Donald Young's Boast USA ensemble complement the strings on his racket. Similar to Adidas' update on the tennis dress, Boast USA put a fresh spin on the traditional polo and shorts.

Worst: Eugenie Bouchard

Eugenie Bouchard and almost everybody who wore this Nike dress deserves a place among the worst dressed at Wimbledon.

Some women tied a belt around the dress to keep it from flying up. Others, such as Sabine Lisicki, opted to wear something else.

As seen in this picture, any wind or exaggerated movement sends the dress flying above the waist.

Sweden's Rebecca Peterson wore the dress during qualifying rounds. She told Tyson Otto of Australia's News.com, "When I was serving, it was coming up, and I felt like the dress was just everywhere. In general, it's quite simple, the dress, but it was flying everywhere."

Best: Camila Giorgi

Short skirts have never been a problem in tennis. After all, it's athletic wear. Camila Giorgi's dress is as short as the Nike disaster. However, it's designed to stay in place. It's lightweight but not see-through. Cute and flirty, it delivers on everything the Nike dress attempted to do, without the flyaway fuss.

Worst: Bethanie Mattek-Sands

Bethanie Mattek-Sands is a fashion rebel. Her cowboy-fringed skirt might have looked OK if not paired with knee-high athletic socks. But then again, it wouldn't be Bethanie if she wore it any other way.

Best: Feliciano Lopez

Feliciano Lopez wore the same style Ellesse design at the French Open, and it looked horrible in blue in gold. But in white, it's just right. The trimming gave his outfit definition.

Worst: Alexander Zverev

Lopez represents the older, well-tailored tennis player. Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga fall into that category. They have discovered their style and stick to it.

Alexander Zverev is the opposite. The 19-year-old sported the same style of outfit worn by Grigor Dimitrov. However, on Zverev, it looked oversized and sloppy. Perhaps it's a teen thing.

Best: Serena Williams

If not for Williams, Nike's Wimbledon would have been a total disaster. Her NikeCourt Premier dress features a mock neck. It's fun and flirty. Her sister Venus Williams wears her own brand Eleven by Venus. But she tweeted how much she loved Serena's dress.

Best and Worst: This Guy

This guy went to Wimbledon decked out in tennis-themed gear. It's a bit over the top, but that's what makes it the best. He has tennis racket designs on his shirt and the official sponsor's tennis balls on the hat. His look is both genius and tacky.
