AEGON Championships 2016: Thursday Tennis Scores, Results, Latest Schedule

Rory MarsdenJun 16, 2016

Defending champion Andy Murray booked his spot in the quarter-finals of the 2016 AEGON Championships as he beat fellow Briton Aljaz Bedene 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday at London's Queen's Club.

The Slovenian-born player more than held his own in the early exchanges, but Murray got a late break of serve to take the first set 6-3 and then saw out the match with little fuss.

The world No. 2 will now face another Brit, Kyle Edmund, in the last eight after Paul-Henri Mathieu withdrew due to injury.

Elsewhere, unseeded Gilles Muller shocked John Isner to set up a quarter-final meeting with Bernard Tomic, and Milos Raonic barely survived his own scare against Jiri Vesely. But the Canadian will have to wait to learn his last-eight opponent, as rain forced play to be suspended during Roberto Bautista Agut's match with Donald Young, per British Tennis.

Thursday Recap

In a rare occurrence during a very damp week at Queen's, play started on time as the rain stayed away, and Murray was immediately put under pressure on his serve as Bedene earned a break point in the first game of the match.

The Scot managed to hold his serve eventually and was more commanding in the third game as he went ahead again at 2-1, but he did look to be struggling slightly with his right shoulder.

Bedene was impressive on serve and traded blows with Murray as they exchanged holds to 3-3.

However, with Murray 4-3 up, he finally earned his first break points and managed to capitalise on the second after questioning Bedene's ace that saved the first.

He duly served out the set to move ahead, and though Murray had not been at his best, it looked as though he could kick on, per TennisTV:

And he earned four break points in the opening game of the second set, but Bedene threw down some excellent first serves and dispatched a brilliant forehand down the line to get out of jail and go 1-0 ahead.

Murray did break in the third game of the second set, but Bedene showed impressive steel to break back and draw level again at 2-2.

The two-time Grand Slam winner continued to throw in some uncharacteristic mistakes, but his net play and return game were impressive, and he managed to get his nose in front again with another break for 4-3.

Two holds of serve saw him finish the job in efficient fashion in 83 minutes, and he will be the favourite to make the last four against Edmund.

Things were a lot closer for third seed Raonic against Vesely. The Canadian was pushed to 12 games in the opening set before needing to survive a tiebreak in the second.

Ultimately, Raonic just about did enough to scrape through:

But Raonic's last-gasp heroics were nothing compared to the bravery shown by Muller during his upset of seventh seed Isner.

The former made multiple comebacks from the brink of defeat, as MailOnline's Stuart Fraser detailed:

Yet it wasn't just near misses that defined this match. Both players were very effective on serve, setting a record along the way, per ATPMediaInfo:

Luxembourg player Muller's reward is a last-eight meeting with Tomic, after the Australian rallied from a set down to see off Fernando Verdasco.

Sadly, play was eventually suspended when heavy rain once again struck. At the time, Roberto Bautista Agut had built a one-set advantage over American Donald Young.

Weather has been an issue all week at these championships, yet it hasn't stopped defending champion Murray from displaying some impressive form ahead of Wimbledon.
