Tensions remain high at the 2016 AEGON Championships after four of Wednesday's six singles matches went down to the wire and needed all three sets to determine who would advance to the next round.

There was also a small shock as Britain's Kyle Edmund battled his way to a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory against No. 8 seed Gilles Simon in Wednesday's opener, with Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu next in his sights.

Recap

American Isner showcased all his serving prestige in a straight-sets defeat of Del Potro on Wednesday, and the loser was visibly frustrated with just how little he was allowed get into the tie.

Former British No. 1 and presenter Annabel Croft provided evidence of the Argentinian boiling over due to his opponent's baseline tactics, with Isner failing to concede even a single serve throughout their clash:

The world No. 17 eventually emerged with a 7-6(2), 6-4 win and cemented his dominance in the first set's tiebreak, where it was only on his serve that Del Potro was allowed to build up any head of steam.

Raonic picked up on Wednesday after bad light brought an end to his clash against Kyrgios the previous evening, and a night of reflection appeared to benefit John McEnroe's trainee to no end.

The Canadian is in his first tournament under McEnroe's guidance, and Raonic convinced ESPN analyst Brad Gilbert he could make a run to the final given his newfound form:

The biggest upset of the day belonged to Edmund, however, as the 21-year-old Englishman excelled in front of a home audience and overcame a mid-match revival from Simon to clinch his spot in the second round.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the result, Edmund said: "I thought in the back end of the second set I had a bit of a mental lapse, I played a sloppy game to get broken, so I was just trying to concentrate on what I was doing before."

Bet365 didn't hold back when detailing what the win meant for the Briton:

It was early in the third set the youngster did tremendously to bounce back at 40-0 down, facing three break points before galloping into a four-game streak and walloping Simon in the decider.

Compatriot Dan Evans didn't do so well against Edmund's next opponent, Mathieu, and the two swapped tiebreak victories in the first two sets before the Frenchman got some revenge for countryman Simon.

California native Simon Johnson joined fellow American Isner in the second round and rallied from a set down to beat Adrian Mannarino 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

He'll face Marin Cilic in the next phase of the tournament after the Croat contender defeated Serbian Janko Tipsarevic 6-4, 6-2 to book his spot in the quarter-final.
