AEGON Championships 2016: Tuesday Tennis Scores, Results, Updated Schedule

Rory MarsdenJun 14, 2016

Second seed Stan Wawrinka became the second major casualty of the 2016 AEGON Championships, as he was downed 6-3, 7-6 (3) by Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the first round at the Queen's Club on Tuesday.

With rain delays continuing to plague the tournament in London, Wawrinka followed fourth seed Richard Gasquet in crashing out at the first hurdle.

Top seed and defending champion Andy Murray is one star safely through. The home crowd favourite emerged victorious in straight sets, beating Nicolas Mahut in two tiebreaks.

Tuesday Recap

Rain again delayed the start of the day's play at Queen's, meaning Wawrinka and Verdasco did not get going until more than 90 minutes after their scheduled start time.

It was the Spaniard who immediately found his groove, forcing two break points in the first game and taking the second with a splendid forehand return into the corner.

It looked as though world No. 4 Wawrinka would break straight back for 1-1 as he claimed three break points on Verdasco's serve, but the 32-year-old saved them all and stretched 2-0 ahead.

The world No. 53 looked in fine shape. His serve and his forehand were his key weapons as he broke again for 4-1, while Wawrinka looked unhappy with the surface.

Despite being offered a couple of opportunities to get back in the set, the Swiss could not find a break, and Verdasco eventually served out the opener with an ace for 6-2.

Looking slightly more comfortable in the second, Wawrinka exchanged holds with Verdasco and crucially got his nose in front at 4-3 before the heavens opened again and officials suspended play, per BBC Tennis:

The break could have served as a reprieve for an under-pressure Wawrinka, although when play did resume, he was unable to assert his usual authority on proceedings, with Verdasco still dictating many of the points.

So when the final stanza went to a tiebreak, there was a sense that the underdog would put an end to this contest. Indeed, Verdasco was far superior in the critical points, winning the breaker 7-3 to spring a big upset.

It'll be a big boost for Murray, who is the top seed at these championships. The two-time Grand Slam winner is seeking to recover from his French Open final loss to Novak Djokovic and was able to grind out a win against Mahut in his first match of the tournament.

The Briton, reunited with coach Ivan Lendl, did eventually clinch the opener, but as BBC tennis correspondent Russell Fuller noted, it wasn't easy work for him:

Nor was the second. Murray was forced to fight back from a break down and save set points yet again. Having missed the chance to serve for a deciding set, Mahut looked demoralised in the breaker, allowing the champion to see this one out.

"Nico's a very accomplished grass-court player, and because of the weather the last few days, we haven't been able to get on the grass too much to hit," said Murray afterwards, per BBC Sport's Piers Newbery. "It was a tricky first round, and I'm glad I managed to get through."

The final match on Tuesday saw Nick Kyrgios face Milos Raonic. That one will resume on Wednesday, though, with bad light bringing an end to proceedings with the score tied at one set each.
