Golden Truth vs. Breezango: The Good, Bad and Ugly of Current WWE Feud

Ryan DilbertJun 3, 2016

Far from center stage, Golden Truth continues to collide with Breezango in a well-intentioned but underwhelming feud.

With this storyline, WWE is breaking recent tradition by giving a midcard tag team rivalry plenty of time to develop. But exerting time and effort doesn't guarantee success. Golden Truth vs. Breezango is an odd blend of comedy and compassion, successes and failures.

R-Truth began recruiting Goldust as a tag team partner in late January. A series of rebuffs and misunderstanding led to those two being brief rivals.

Goldust started teaming with Fandango, while R-Truth aligned himself with Tyler Breeze. Those partnerships imploded in a hurry.

Soon the ballroom dancer and the male model joined forces, as Goldust and R-Truth finally formed the duo WWE had been teasing for months. Now Golden Truth is in the midst of a losing streak, which is made worse by Breezango mocking them at every step.

The highs and lows of this angle might get lost in its ridiculousness, but they are worth exploring. In many ways, Golden Truth vs. Breezango is a study in the potential of a low-rung feud.

The Good

1 of 4

WWE has shown surprising patience in letting the story of R-Truth and Goldust's alliance unfold. What looked like a throwaway narrative has become one of the longest running storylines going.

As Wrestling Inc pointed out, "The Golden Truth angle has officially lasted from January to June."

The League of Nations didn't last that long. Neither did Summer Rae's relationship with Rusev or Paul Heyman's advocacy of Ryback or Cesaro.

The result of this slow-burn approach is that it's easier to get invested. We have seen R-Truth and Goldust bicker and reconcile so much that it almost feels like they are family.

And WWE has wisely gone a unique route with this new team. Usually the company introduces a new duo or Superstar by way of a winning streak. Be it Bo Dallas or The Shining Stars, fans are supposed to take notice of these acts because of these victories.

R-Truth and Goldust, though, began their partnership with a series of failures. They started just 1-5, per CageMatch.net.

That creates both sympathy for these struggling babyfaces and allows Tyler Breeze and Fandango the perfect opportunity to gloat. Breezango have turned into the kids at the playground who laugh when someone falls off the swing. That's a fun role for them.

The two pairings have allowed all four men to showcase their personalities too.

Golden Truth has been amusing at times, including when they sat in on commentary Monday night. Alan O'Brien of the Wrestling Observer wrote of that moment, "Key to its success was allowing two of the most naturally amusing men on the roster to be themselves, free from the writers’ awful input."

The rivalry has helped Breezango jell, giving the team a focus right away and fitting foils to clash with.

The Bad

2 of 4

The fatal flaw in the Golden Truth vs. Breezango feud is that it involves Golden Truth and Breezango.

R-Truth and Co. have been treated like meaningless additions to the roster for so long that the importance of this story suffers. This is a two-on-two showdown featuring four guys off the end of the bench. It's hard to get excited about either a 47-year-old Goldust or a guy in Fandango who was barely on TV last year.

Even if everything clicks story-wise, this rivalry has a low ceiling.

On top of that, the climax is sure to disappoint. Should Roman Reigns and John Cena go to war, fans know that a classic could be the apex of that collision. That's far from true here.

Golden Truth and Breezango have already faced off twice before, and the results have been completely forgettable. Add some more bad blood, a bit more hype and place this on a pay-per-view stage, and the result is likely to be just fine at best.

Fandango and R-Truth's list of standout matches is mighty short.

Low expectations will hurt this rivalry. And so will the resulting lack of buzz.

The Ugly

3 of 4

Many of the details of the battle between Breezango and Golden Truth feel like they were tossed in with little forethought. So much of it screams that the feud is a low priority for WWE.

How long did it take, for example, for WWE to come up with Tyler Breeze and Fandango's team name? Probably no more than 30 seconds. Breezango sounds like a joke name.

R-Truth's new entrance song, where he repeats "Golden Truth" ad nauseam, is terrible too. It feels like the rapping wrestler penned the song on a napkin two minutes before emerging from the curtains.

The banter between the groups has been uncomfortably bad at times.

Jason Powell of ProWrestling.net wrote of some insults thrown on the May 30 Raw: "Truth referred to Breeze and Fandango as Gomer Pyle and Beaver Cleaver. Sigh." These moments are supposed to be comedic, but bad comedy leaves quite the stench.

The less WWE Creative can flop like that moving forward, the better.

Projections

The Golden Truth saga may continue, but this rivalry will wrap up at Money in the Bank.

There isn't much further for the story to go. Once R-Truth and Goldust halt their losing streak and get one big moment of triumph over Breezango, it will be time to move on to a new chapter. That resolution promises to come at the next pay-per-view.

There's no guarantee that either duo will stick together in July anyway. The upcoming WWE draft could end Tyler Breeze and Fandango's bond.

Along the way, expect things to get even sillier. With so many comedy acts playing parts in this narrative, WWE is likely to head into goofy territory. That could mean anything from food fights to fart jokes.

This could be a bizarre work of engaging theater, but Breezango vs. Golden Truth is probably destined to be low-rent comic relief.
