WWE NXT Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from June 1

Erik BeastonJun 2, 2016

With only seven days until June 8's TakeOver: The End, NXT hit the WWE Network airwaves Wednesday night for a broadcast that focused heavily on a tag team not even scheduled for the live special, resulting in their status as "biggest winners" from the June 1 episode.

Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano have steadily built their stars since arriving in NXT, losing some and winning others before their big breakout on Wednesday. Interrupting former tag team champions The Revival, they established themselves as ready to battle for the titles. But to do so, they would have to beat Dash and Dawson.

No problem, as it turned out.

In the night's main event match, Ciampa and Gargano defeated The Revival in a major upset. While they were thoroughly beaten down by the former champions afterward, the win represents a breakout evening of sorts for the longtime indy stars.

The Revival will battle American Alpha at TakeOver next Wednesday night in what figures to be the final chapter of that program. If that is the case, Chad Gable and Jason Jordan will need new challengers to keep their reign fresh and exciting. Ciampa and Gargano can be those guys.

There were other winners on Wednesday's broadcast, as well as one notable loser whose days of relevance appear over.

Winner: Asuka

It has been a while since NXT delved into the psyche of Asuka. At first, her unpredictability and the danger that surrounded her helped define her character. Since then, WWE Creative has relaxed a bit, failing to follow up with any further character development.

Wednesday night, the Asuka whom fans were originally introduced to returned, unloading on Nia Jax with a rant in her native tongue before warning the No. 1 contender to be afraid of her.

It was a short and simple angle to close out the show, but one that re-established the current champion as the unstable and unpredictable competitor that entered the brand just nine months ago.

Ready to take over as the face of women's wrestling in NXT, her performance against Jax at TakeOver: The End will determine whether she is really up for the task. Until then, she can rest assured knowing the NXT writing staff has turned its attention back to the titleholder.

Loser: Elias Samson

There is an enigmatic and haunting element to The Drifter gimmick, but unfortunately NXT management appears to have lost faith in the man behind it, if his recent booking is any suggestion.

Elias Samson has become a glorified jobber, an enhancement talent to be bumped around by guys like Shinsuke Nakamura and Finn Balor. On Wednesday night, Austin Aries added his name to that list, tearing through Samson and forcing him to tap out to The Last Chancery.

The match was a squash of sorts, one in which Samson never truly looked in control. As a result, it is perfectly acceptable to question whether the writing staff has given up on the Pittsburgh native.

What started as a compelling gimmick has descended into mediocrity, and the performer's inability to vary his offense enough to win over the crowd, combined with a sudden lack of faith by the writers, has damned Samson to the undercard.

Winners: The Revival

They may not be completely comfortable on the microphone, but Dash and Dawson had a rare opportunity to get over by talking, making that all-important connection with the audience that has been absent from their performances.

How many times has the former tag champions' theme music played over the PA system, only for the duo to be greeted by complete and utter apathy? The team has been outstanding between the ropes but has not had the chance to get themselves or their characters over on the microphone.

NXT took steps toward changing that Wednesday night.

As those opportunities come more frequently, both Dash and Dawson will grow and develop more confidence. Once that happens, do not be surprised at all if the throwbacks to a bygone era become an even more complete act than they already are.
