Doug Kyed of NESN confirmed Edelman was starting New England's third preseason game against the Carolina Panthers on Friday.
Latest on Edelman's Practice Status
Thursday, Aug. 18
After a day on the practice field with strength and conditioning coach Moses Cabrera, Edelman looked "exhausted," according to Michael Giardi of CSNNE.
Edelman participated in all drills Aug. 14, per Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal.
"Edelman [is] running routes with the rest of the receivers," Giardi noted Aug. 10. "Just planted hard off the surgically repaired foot in wet, sloppy conditions."
On Aug. 9, Tom E. Curran of CSNNE noted Edelman threw his helmet in "disgust" after going off to the side during the team's session before having his lower left leg looked at. Edelman later walked off the field, per Kyed.
Mike Garafolo of NFL Network later reported, citing sources, that Edelman suffered an injury scare but is OK. "We'll see if he even misses any time," Garafolo added.
Edelman's Return Is a Major Boost to Pats Offense
Edelman is a crucial piece of the Patriots passing attack, as he illustrated by racking up 258 catches over the previous three seasons. Injuries are the only thing that have slowed him down since he has emerged as one of quarterback Tom Brady's favorite targets.
He missed seven games last season after suffering a broken foot. He returned in the playoffs before needing a second surgery during the offseason. In the broader picture, he's appeared in all 16 regular-season games just once in seven years.
Though the Patriots have depth in their receiving corps, the offense can get closer to operating at full capacity with Edelman back in action.
