Novak Djokovic's dream of winning a maiden French Open crown endured on Wednesday after the world No. 1 battled through rain delays to record a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 7-5 fourth-round victory over Roberto Bautista Agut.

The Serb conceded a set for the first time in this year's tournament, but he fought back with a vengeance to beat his defiant Spanish opponent into submission, concluding their clash on Wednesday morning.

Djokovic will encounter Tomas Berdych in the next phase of his Roland Garros campaign after he defeated David Ferrer 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 on Wednesday, with David Goffin and 13th-seed Dominic Thiem also making it through.

Djokovic Down but Far From Out

Djokovic was pushed hard by Bautista Agut on Wednesday.

Bautista Agut offered French Open front-runner Djokovic the toughest test of his tournament so far across Tuesday and Wednesday, but the top seed ultimately pulled clear as he so often does.

Despite not managing to win a set, the Spaniard did give his No. 1-ranked foe a grand scare on the Philippe Chatrier Court, and Djokovic's prize was a pricey career landmark, per the official Roland Garros Twitter account:

Appealing to his renowned, relaxed demeanour, Djokovic then took the time to celebrate in the aftermath with a ball boy from the French Open ranks, per Eurosport UK:

The path seemed set for Djokovic to dominate the fourth (and final) set after rampaging to a 6-1 win in the third, but Bautista Agut proved value for money and broke his opponent to even lead 4-2 at one point.

But Djokovic's tirade was unforgiving, and a three-game streak at the match's end saw him over the line just when a spike in energy was needed most, taking his place in the final eight as a result.

Serena Saunters Past Svitolina

Williams obliterated Svitolina 6-1, 6-1, on Wednesday.

It took reigning Roland Garros champion Serena Williams a little more than an hour to do away with the challenge of No. 18 seed Svitolina on Wednesday as the American booked her place in the last eight with flying colours.

There was barely even a chance for rain to play a factor, and it was pointed out that the first 6-1 set proved particularly devastating:

As impressive as Serena was in booking her quarter-final place, though, it was ultimately a long Svitolina backhand that sealed her fate, as shown by Eurosport UK:

To the Ukrainian's credit, Svitolina at least kept mistakes to a minimum, and it was actually the defending French Open title-holder who committed the majority of unforced errors, per the official Roland Garros website.

Serena will now face Yulia Putintseva in the last eight after she defeated Carla Suarez Navarro 7-5, 7-5 on Wednesday, and the unseeded Kazakh contender is sure to be seeking further upsets in Paris.
