Rafael Nadal vs. Facundo Bagnis: Score and Reaction from 2016 French Open

Rory MarsdenMay 26, 2016

Nine-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal cruised into the third round at the 2016 tournament on Thursday with a crushing 6-3, 6-0, 6-3 victory over Argentina's Facundo Bagnis.

The Spanish clay-court master was surprisingly broken in the opening game of the match, and Bagnis, the world No. 99, went 2-0 up.

However, the 26-year-old then won just one of the next 14 games as Nadal saw out his second convincing victory of the week in style.

He also joined an elite club by claiming his 200th career win in Grand Slam competition, per the New York Times' Christopher Clarey:

Nadal had a shaky start on Philippe-Chatrier Court at Roland Garros against his fellow left-hander.

He went behind a break and was staring at a 3-0 deficit when 0-30 down as Bagnis fired some heavy forehands, per Live Tennis:

However, Bagnis was not in the ascendancy for long. Once Nadal had his first game on the board, there was no stopping him.

He broke back to level at 2-2 and then got his own break for 4-2, eventually serving out the opener for a 6-3 winning margin.

With the bit between his teeth, he crushed Bagnis into submission, breaking three times in the third set while not offering up a single opportunity on his own serve.

He took the second set in barely 20 minutes and looked a long way off the nervy player he had been upon commencement, per the Roland Garros Twitter account:

A break of serve gave him the initiative in the third set before Bagnis finally got another game on the board to move 2-1 behind. Bagnis also succeeded in taking more games off Nadal than the three Sam Groth managed in the opening round.

There was to be no comeback, though, as Nadal picked up another break and forced Bagnis to serve to stay in the match at 5-1 down.

To his credit, the Argentinian held to stem the flow with Nadal crushing winner after winner. Bagnis even made his illustrious opponent work hard for the win as he broke for the second time in the match with the 29-year-old serving for a place in the next round.

But Nadal immediately claimed the break back and sealed an imperious victory after a fine display. Up next for Nadal is the winner of Nicolas Mahut and Marcel Granollers.
