French Open 2016 Results: Winners, Scores, Stats from Wednesday Singles Bracket
Second seed Andy Murray was pushed to the limit again on Wednesday, as he needed five sets to overcome a determined Mathias Bourgue in Round 2 at the French Open.
The Scot was down in sets by 2-1 at one point in the contest, as his opponent capitalised on frailties that were on show in Murray’s last match with Radek Stepanek. But the two-time major champion recomposed himself to take a 6-2, 2-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 triumph.
Elsewhere, there were wins for 2015 champion Stanislas Wawrinka and eighth seed Milos Raonic. In the women's draw, second seed Agnieszka Radwanska coasted through her match, while Garbine Muguruza showed her quality on the clay courts, swaggering into the third round.

Murray Battles Through Again
Murray is renowned for his fortitude and will to win. But in the Scotsman’s storied career, rarely have we seen him have to call on these qualities quite so early in a Grand Slam tournament.
As noted by BreatheSport, while a lot of the elite players sailed through their opening matches, the 29-year-old has had to put in some diligent early work:
"That's 10 sets (lasting 7 hrs & 15 mins) in 3 days for Andy Murray.

After taking the first set, 6-2, it seemed as though normal service was resumed for Murray following his close call against Stepanek. However, Bourgue found his feet in front of his home crowd, putting his illustrious opponent under big pressure, forcing mistakes and taking the next two sets with ease.
The Frenchman had never been in a four-set match before, though, which showed as Murray came on strong. Having taken the fourth stanza, the result then never looked to be in doubt, although the world No. 2 seed’s rivals will be watching on with intrigue at his struggles so far.
Murray’s mother, Judy, inferred she may need a tonic for her nerves after another absorbing five-set match:
This is the moment he clinched the win:
The holder, Wawrinka, had things much easier in his tie, overcoming Taro Daniel in straight sets. Nick Kyrgios was also extremely impressive on Wednesday, as he swatted aside Igor Sijsling 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 in the French capital.
"I returned a lot better than I did in the first round," said Kyrgios afterwards, per the tournament's official website. "I knew what my game plan was going to be, and I'm really happy. I thought I found my form from the back of the court. You don't see too many of these [clay] matches go that quick. I just played good tactical tennis."

Raonic didn't have to get out of first gear as he took on Adrian Mannarino late in the day. Aside from a tight second set, the Canadian dominated with his hard hitting and big serves. Many expect him to challenge in the major championships for the remainder of 2016.
In the women's draw, the star attraction on Wednesday was Radwanska, and she didn't disappoint with a classy win over Caroline Garcia.
The Pole has only gotten to the quarters of this tournament in the past, but given her rise to world No. 2 ahead of the tournament at Roland Garros, many expect her to really challenge for the title.
This 6-2, 6-4 win was indicative of a player in fine form. As ESPN Tennis noted, given the shocks in the French Open so far, this victory would have been a relief for Radwanska:
"After Top 5 seeds (3) Kerber and (5) Azarenka were upset yesterday, (2) Radwanska and (4) Muguruza lose a combined eight games today. #RG16

Meanwhile, Muguruza showed why she’s considered a potential winner by so many, producing a hugely dominant showing to beat Myrtille Georges, 6-2, 6-0. As the tournament’s official Twitter feed noted, she was not in the mood to hang around:
It’s going to be fascinating to see just how Murray responds after these two early matches. Physically, they could play a big part, especially if he’s forced into a five-setter against a higher class of opponent. But mentally, they’re wins that will be a huge boost to him as he seeks to win this tournament for the first time.
Even so, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will be hoping to avoid similar close shaves when they get their respective campaigns back underway on Thursday. Favourite for the women’s title Serena Williams will also be back in action in Round 2 after a straightforward opening match.
