French Open 2016: Tuesday Results, Highlights, Scores Recap from Roland Garros
Angelique Kerber and Victoria Azarenka became the latest top-10 players on the women's side to see their 2016 French Open runs come to an early end during Tuesday's action. Top seed and defending champion Serena Williams managed to avoid the Round 1 upset bug, though.
Meanwhile, things were different in the men's draw, where chalk was the name of the game. Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal all reached the second round. Murray did get pushed to five sets over the course of two days by Radek Stepanek before finally advancing.
Let's check out the complete list of Tuesday's results from both draws. The breakdown also includes a closer look at some of the key stories from that day's play at the season's second major.

Murray is no stranger to drama during his matches; in fact, there are times when it seems like he thrives in those situations. So it never felt like he was on the brink of elimination, even when he fell behind by two sets against Stepanek during Monday's portion of the match.
Sure enough, the second-seeded Scot battled back to win the match in five sets. He registered just 39 winners compared to 57 for his Czech counterpart, but his always-reliable defense and ability to limit errors allowed him to fight back and get the victory.
Afterward, he gave full credit to Stepanek for preventing him from finding a comfort zone, as noted by BBC Sport.
"He's always been extremely difficult to play," Murray said. "I wasn't able to dictate many of the points, I wasn't in a great rhythm, and that's credit to him and the way that he played. I fought extremely hard today, and I'll get a chance to play again tomorrow."
The first round was a little more comfortable for fellow title contenders Djokovic and Nadal.
Djokovic made quick work of Yen-Hsun Lu. He won 74 percent of the points on his second serve, was successful on eight of his 13 net approaches and finished with a plus-13 winner-to-error ratio as his Taiwanese opponent struggled to remain competitive.
Although he advanced without much resistance, Carole Bouchard of the Yellow Ball Corner noted he didn't look like himself in the early going:
Nadal was even more dominant, dropping just three games in his destruction of Sam Groth. The most promising statistic was probably the fact he won 59 percent of points while returning serve. When he's playing that type of defense, he's a force on clay.
The nine-time French Open champion has struggled to stay healthy in recent years, which makes easy victories in the early rounds even more important. If he can limit the amount of mileage on his body during the first week, his championship odds will improve markedly.
Roland Garros highlighted the match point that sent him into Round 2:
The only top-20 player sent packing on the men's side was Kevin Anderson. His loss to Stephane Robert didn't come as a total shock, however, because the South African's pure power game isn't ideal for the clay surface.
Looking ahead, Murray returns to action right away Wednesday for a clash with Mathias Bourgue. It's a golden opportunity for him to score a more routine victory to offset the extra effort he needed to exert to survive his opening match.
A pair of seeded Americans could face trickier tests as the second round gets underway. Both John Isner (vs. Kyle Edmund) and Jack Sock (vs. Dustin Brown) could find themselves on upset alert if they don't have their A-games tomorrow.

The women's bracket is already starting to open up with Kerber and Azarenka joining No. 7 seed Roberta Vinci among the notable players knocked out in Round 1.
Kerber simply made too many mistakes against a game Kiki Bertens. The German star finished the match with 28 unforced errors and just nine winners. She also won just 60 percent of her first-serve points, leaving too many openings for her Dutch counterpart.
It's obviously a massive setback after her Australian Open triumph to start the major season. Her loss continued a growing trend in that regard, however, as Jon Wertheim of Sports Illustrated pointed out:
Azarenka never looked like herself before retiring in the third set of her matchup with Karin Knapp because of a knee injury, per ESPN Tennis. She finished with no aces and eight double-faults, illustrating the lack of explosion she was able to generate with her bottom half.
She's one of the few players capable of challenging Williams on a consistent basis when healthy. Alas, those stretches of regular action without some type of health setback have been rare, as discussed by Matt Cronin of Tennis Reporters:
Speaking of Williams, the top seed needed just 42 minutes to overwhelm Magdalena Rybarikova. Although she hasn't played her best tennis since losing at the U.S. Open last year, nobody else has stepped up to seriously push toward the No. 1 spot.
Roland Garros spotlighted match point from the tournament favorite:
WTA Tennis noted the American said the match was "a little short" before joking about how many times she's taken part in the event:
"When they were introducing me, they were like, 'The 15th time.' I was like, 'Wow, this is too many.' It was a lot. I was thinking that's a lot.
But sometimes I do think about some players, and I'm like, 'Wow, I played them and now they're like coaching and they have grandkids, you know.
"
Among the other big-name players to advance Tuesday were Serena's sister, Venus Williams, and 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic.
Moving to Wednesday's action, two players with legitimate title hopes in Garbine Muguruza and Simona Halep are back on the court. Both should move through without much drama, but Muguruza will be dealing with the home crowd looking to get behind Frenchwoman Myrtille Georges.
Caroline Garcia is another player who will be hoping to ride that wave of home support to an upset as she takes on Agnieszka Radwanska. The second seed has endured a lackluster stretch since the clay-court season began, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see that match go deep into the third set.
