Teams Have Inquired About Sproles
Tuesday, May 17
According to Rapoport, the Eagles "received calls of trade interest" for Sproles in the middle of the draft, and the running back plans to stay away from the team during OTAs until everything is resolved.
Sproles is on the West Coast with his family, Rapoport added, but the situation isn't "filled with frustration."
Versatile Sproles Has Played Big Role for Eagles
The Eagles acquired Sproles from New Orleans in a 2014 trade, and this is the final year of his contract. He was a key piece of the Chip Kelly era, carrying the ball 140 times and catching 95 passes over two seasons. He also continues to make an impact on special teams after 10 seasons in the NFL, leading the league with 446 punt return yards and two punt return touchdowns last year.
The 32-year-old Sproles is Philadelphia's No. 2 running back behind Ryan Mathews. The Eagles have already traded one running back this offseason, shipping DeMarco Murray to the Tennessee Titans in March.
Matt Lombardo of 97.5 The Fanatic did note the new Eagles regime drafted running back Wendell Smallwood in the fifth round. It's unclear what, if anything, Smallwood's presence means for Sproles right now.
Per Spotrac, Sproles carries a $3.5 million salary with a $4.5 million cap hit. It's not a number too huge to move should the Eagles go with Mathews and Smallwood in their backfield this season.
Given Sproles' versatility and that teams are always in search of playmakers, there would seem to be a long list of potential suitors looking to make a deal happen.
