Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Kuhn, Packers Reportedly Talking Deal
Wednesday, May 11
Ryan Wood of USA Today Network-Wisconsin reported there is a "mutual interest" between Kuhn and the Green Bay Packers, according to a source.
Kuhn, 33, has played the last nine seasons with the Packers. He carried the ball nine times for 28 yards last season, numbers that far underrate what he brings to the table. Football Outsiders recorded Kuhn as being on the field for 305 snaps, fourth among fullbacks.
The veteran is a four-time Pro Bowler, including each of the last two years, and has made two All-Pro teams. Green Bay still has Kuhn's locker up at Lambeau Field, per Wood, indicating the team plans on bringing him back.
According to Wood's source, Kuhn wants to play at least one more season in Green Bay. He's been an active member of the NFL roster since being called up to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2006. The Packers signed him in 2007, and he's become a noted fan favorite ever since.
Making matters a little more difficult is the presence of Aaron Ripkowski, who was selected in the sixth round in 2015. Ripkowski was almost entirely limited to special teams play in 2015.
“I’d like to see Rip take a big step with the offense," Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said, per Weston Hodkiewicz of the Green Bay Post-Gazette. "He needs to get the details down. I thought he was a good special teams player for us, and he definitely can be one of our core players. For a fullback with his size [6'1", 246 lbs] and the way he’s built, he did a really good job with open-field tackling. I was impressed with a number of things that he did."
Most teams aren't carrying a pair of fullbacks on their rosters at this point, so it'd be understandable if the Packers want to go with youth. But it appears it'll be only a matter of time before Kuhn's back at Lambeau—at least for one more year.
