Jared Goff, Rams Agree to Contract: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

The Los Angeles Rams tabbed Jared Goff as their franchise quarterback when they selected him No. 1 overall in the 2016 NFL draft, and the 21-year-old signal-caller is now officially under contract after putting pen to paper on his first professional deal Thursday.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the contract is worth $27.9 million over four years with an $18.6 million signing bonus.

Goff cemented himself as one of the nation's top gunslingers when he threw for 12,195 yards and 96 touchdowns during three seasons with the California Golden Bears, but he'll need to adjust to life in less quarterback-friendly surroundings.

Beyond the simple fact that the Rams don't have much in the way of proven playmakers outside of wide receiver Tavon Austin, running back Todd Gurley and veteran pass-catcher Kenny Britt, Goff figures to meet a fairly steep learning curve upon arrival.

While game-planning for faster, stronger and more complex NFL defenses presents a big challenge, Goff will also need to slide under center more in head coach Jeff Fisher's pro-style offense following three years in Cal's spread Bear Raid scheme.

However, a player of Goff's caliber should be able to make the transition in relatively quick fashion.

The Rams' new quarterback received rave reviews regarding his football IQ throughout the predraft process, including from Bleacher Report's Matt Miller, and the tactical freedom he had in college—albeit in a far more pass-friendly system—indicated he'll be able to take command of the huddle confidently in no time.

"I was in control of a lot as far as protections, route combos, running plays and everything in between," Goff said, according to ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner. "At the line of scrimmage, I was changing a lot of stuff. I think it is something that will transition well, and I can carry with me to the next level."

For a team that has floundered spectacularly on offense over the past nine seasons, that kind of poised presence is what Los Angeles needs.

The Rams haven't ranked higher than 21st in points scored or 23rd in yards gained since 2006, and they're coming off a futile 2015 campaign that produced a 32nd-ranked offense in terms of total yards.

But with the team invigorated by Goff's presence in fresh surroundings, the Rams finally appear primed for tangible and sustainable development in the scoring column.
