Murray Sets Penguins Record with 47 Saves in Regulation Win

Bleacher Report MilestonesMay 4, 2016

Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Matt Murray stopped 47 of the 49 shots he faced in Monday's 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals, setting a new franchise playoff record for most saves in a non-overtime victory, per ESPN Stats & Info.

With Penguins mainstay Marc-Andre Fleury suffering a concussion March 31, the 21-year-old rookie took over as the team's primary netminder down the stretch, finishing his first regular season with a 9-2-1 record, 2.00 goals-against-average (GAA) and .930 save percentage.

Murray has carried that success into the playoffs, winning five of his six starts while posting a 1.79 GAA and .944 save percentage.

Fleury was actually available Monday for the first time since March 31, yet Penguins coach Mike Sullivan opted to stick with his red-hot rookie between the pipes.

Murray obviously rewarded the decision, though he did surrender a pair of third-period goals to narrow a 3-0 lead to just 3-2.

After holding on for the tight win, Murray is a strong bet to get another start in Wednesday's Game 4, with the Penguins looking to take a commanding 3-1 advantage in the series before heading back to D.C. for Saturday's Game 5.

As a 21-year-old former third-round draft pick, Murray has already far exceeded even the most optimistic of expectations regarding his contribution to the NHL squad this season.
