Chris Culliver Released by Redskins: Latest Comments and Reaction

Timothy RappMay 2, 2016

Washington released cornerback Chris Culliver on Monday, general manager Scot McCloughan announced, per the team.

Culliver, 27, accumulated 16 tackles in six games with the team last season.

The release comes just one season after Culliver signed a four-year, $32 million contract with the team. Any guarantees in his contract for 2016 were rendered null after he was suspended a game last season for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, per Darin Gantt of Pro Football Talk, making his release financially viable for Washington.

Anthony Gulizia of the Washington Times has more on the financial implications of Culliver's release:

Two ACL tears in the last three years were also a factor, as was the offseason signing of star corner Josh Norman and the selection of Kendall Fuller in the third round of this year's NFL draft. While it's unclear when Fuller will be able to play—he tore his meniscus in 2015—he'll slide into a much deeper crop of cornerbacks than the team had a season ago, joining Norman, Bashaud Breeland, Quinton Dunbar and Greg Toler.

Culliver was clearly the odd man out in that group, especially with Norman and Breeland firmly entrenched as the starters.

But according to John Keim of ESPN.com, McCloughan wouldn't be opposed to bringing back Culliver. The team didn't offer to restructure his contract before releasing him, however.

"The door is not closed," McCloughan acknowledged.

Before signing with Washington, Culliver had established himself as a solid cornerback in San Francisco, registering a career-high four interceptions and 15 passes defended in 2014. If teams believe he can regain that form and avoid injury, he's potentially a savvy and cheap addition for organizations looking to build depth at the position.

It's unlikely teams will treat him like a potential starter and pay him anything close to the big deal he received with Washington before last season, however.
