Jamar Taylor to Browns: Latest Trade Details, Comments and Reaction
Seeking to add depth to their secondary, the Cleveland Browns acquired cornerback Jamar Taylor in a trade with the Miami Dolphins.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the deal. Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot confirmed the trade. Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal noted the Browns sent the 231st pick in the draft and the Dolphins sent back Taylor and the 250th pick.
The Dolphins officially announced the deal on their Twitter account.
The 25-year-old Taylor was a second-round pick by the Dolphins in 2013. He appeared in 33 games (nine starts) over the last three years. His best season was 2015, as he set career highs in starts (six), tackles (35), passes defensed (four) and fumble recoveries (one).
However, Pro Football Focus metrics graded Taylor out as the sixth-worst cornerback in the NFL last season:
While those stats aren't going to get Cleveland fans jumping up and down with excitement, there are reasons to feel optimistic about his ability to develop into a capable defensive back.
ESPN's Pat McManamon pointed out getting a fresh start could be a good thing for Taylor:
Invoking Justin Gilbert's name will also cause panic among Browns fans, but at least in this case Taylor only cost a seventh-round pick. Rapoport tried to take a more glass-half-full approach:
Taylor is still young enough to have upside as at least a nickel cornerback moving forward. The Browns didn't pay much to acquire him, and their new coaching staff must see something in the young man to take a chance on him.
There is nowhere for Taylor to go but up after a disappointing career in Miami. He's been given a second life with a new team and has the motivation to become a capable defender in 2016.
