Derek Watt to Chargers: Twitter Reacts to FB Being Selected in 2016 NFL Draft

Adam WellsApr 30, 2016

The NFL will have to deal with another member of the Watt family, as the San Diego Chargers made fullback Derek Watt the 198th pick in the 2016 draft.

Watt is the brother of Houston Texans superstar J.J. Watt, who has done well establishing the family name in the NFL with four All-Pro selections and three Defensive Player of the Year trophies. But no pressure, little brother.

Not surprisingly, social media had a lot of fun with the addition of a second Watt to the NFL.

Sticking with the family, Watt's brothers each shared a message of congratulations on Twitter after the Chargers gave Derek the call:

It's funny that J.J. Watt said he would be coming to visit because the NFL on ESPN noted the brothers won't have to wait long for their first head-to-head matchup:

In that case, however, it will be Derek coming to visit big brother because the Chargers are traveling to Houston.

There may have been a method behind the Chargers' decision to select Watt, per Scout.com's Benjamin Worgull:

Pro Football Focus' College Twitter account noted that Watt is a capable receiver out of the backfield:

Anyone who has seen J.J. play tight end in the NFL should not be surprised that good hands seem to run in the family.

Here's the best of the rest from social media after Watt became a Charger:

It's hard for a fullback in the NFL to get noticed, unless he isn't doing his job well. Watt may not be a long-term exception to that rule, but he has name cache and a rapport with San Diego's young running back to be a valuable addition.

The Chargers needed to get more physical on offense if they wanted to compete with the stellar defenses lined up in the AFC West. No one will help bring a swagger and attitude back to San Diego more than Watt.
