TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open 2016: Saturday Tennis Results and Latest Schedule

Christopher SimpsonApr 30, 2016

Grigor Dimitrov reached the final of the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open in Turkey on Saturday after beating Ivo Karlovic, and he'll face Diego Schwartzman.

Dimitrov took the match in straight sets, his ruthlessness in the tiebreakers separating the two players in an otherwise close contest with little in it.

Later in the day, Schwartzman came from behind to beat Federico Delbonis for the right to meet him in the final.

Saturday Recap

As to be expected in a battle between the second and third seeds of the competition, Dimitrov's match with Karlovic was tight, hard-fought affair.

Indeed, in the first set, neither was able to break the other, and there was just one break point played. That came on Dimitrov's serve at 2-2, but the Bulgarian responded in the most emphatic way possible—smashing an ace past Karlovic to save the point and another to hold serve.

There was little to separate the pair until the inevitable tiebreaker at the end of the set, and Dimitrov drew first blood, per the Istanbul Open:

The second set was much the same as the first, with neither able to earn even a single break point opportunity this time, such was the calibre of the serviceDimitrov and Karlovic won just nine and eight return points respectively, according to ATP World Tour.

Once again it was in the tiebreaker where the difference was made, and Dimitrov again made short work of Karlovic, who won just two points.

Unlike the first semi-final, it did not take long for there to be a break as Schwartzman broke Delbonis in the first game. His compatriot broke back at the perfect time, though, to pull level at 5-5.

In the tiebreaker, Delbonis looked to be in danger as Schwartzman went 5-2 up, but as Istanbul Open revealed the former claimed the set in style:

An early break in the second saw Schwartzman go 3-1 up, and it was a lead he did not relinquish as he saw it out in 37 minutes, per Tennis TV:

Yet another break for Schwartzman gave him an advantage early in the decider, and the 23-year-old did so again on the way to taking the match comfortably.

Dimitrov's win takes him into his eighth ATP World Tour final, while Schwartzman will take part in his first. The former has won four of his previous seven so he'll feel confident heading into Sunday's match, but the pair have never played each other before which adds an extra layer of intrigue to the contest.
