Eli Apple to Giants: Twitter Reacts as CB Is Selected in 2016 NFL Draft

Alec NathanApr 28, 2016

The New York Giants were forced to scramble after the top three players on their board were selected just ahead of them, according to Bleacher Report's Matt Miller, and they ultimately landed on Ohio State cornerback Eli Apple with the 10th pick in the 2016 NFL draft on Thursday.

NJ Advance Media's Jordan Raanan pointed to a series of unfortunate events that unfolded to force the Giants' hand, as the Tennessee Titans traded up to No. 8 overall for Michigan State's Jack Conklin and the Chicago Bears moved up to No. 9 overall for Georgia Bulldogs edge-rusher Leonard Floyd

SB Nation's Dan Kadar echoed that sentiment:

However, ESPN.com's Ohm Youngmisuk provided a silver lining for the Giants in the midst of a chaotic 10 minutes:

"[Vernon] Hargreaves is a great player," Giants general manager Jerry Reese told reporters of New York's choice, per the New York Daily News' Ralph Vacchiano. "We thought Eli is a better player."

Of course, the proceedings wouldn't have been complete without some jokes being made at Apple's expense after an anonymous scout said he was a bad cook in an article penned by the Journal Sentinel's Bob McGinn

The pick appeared to be a reach on the surface, but the Giants undoubtedly filled a need by picking Apple—even if they could have accomplished it with a few picks later via a trade back.

New York ranked dead last in opponents' average passing yards (298.9) last season, and pairing Apple with free-agent signee Janoris Jenkins as well as 2015 draft pick Landon Collins could in time give the Giants one of the league's most frightening young secondaries.
