Jack Conklin to Titans: Trade Details, Twitter Reaction in 2016 NFL Draft
When the Tennessee Titans originally held the No. 1 pick, many mocked a left tackle of the future in their direction. Two major trades later, the Titans got their man.
The Titans sent the No. 15 overall pick, a third-round pick (No. 76) and a 2017 second-round pick to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for the No. 8 pick and a sixth-round selection (No. 176 overall) Thursday.
Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports highlighted Michigan State's ability to find buried talent:
Coming into draft night, Laremy Tunsil was expected to be the first offensive tackle off the board. A controversial video of him allegedly smoking led to his slide. And also getting Crying Jordan'd:
The Tunsil-related humor was, as expected, all over the place:
The Browns, meanwhile, are loading up on picks. They came into the draft process with the second overall selection and have moved all the way back to No. 15, adding a bunch of picks over the next two years. Andrew Brandt of ESPN wondered if a recently unemployed general manager found his way to Cleveland:
For the first time in a long time, though, Cleveland appears to have a plan. The team is going to be bad in 2016, but that's by design. The Browns skimped in free agency and sent away a number of veterans in hopes of infusing the roster with young talent.
Daryl Ruiter of The Fan provided a list of all the Browns' picks:
Here is a look at the reactions from the best of the rest:
Conklin will have to compete for the left tackle spot. The Titans selected Taylor Lewan with the No. 11 pick two years ago. He has already developed into an above-average tackle and was one of the lone bright spots in a bad Tennessee offensive line a year ago.
Making the switch from left to right tackle can be challenging. Conklin, especially as a rookie, may wind up on the right side. The Titans had picks to play with, but using their leverage on someone who might not protect Marcus Mariota's blind side is a little concerning. Conklin was the third-best tackle on most boards before character concerns sent Tunsil dropping down.
With Tunsil falling down to No. 13, it's fair to wonder if the Titans were better off hanging back and giving up less in a move.
