DeForest Buckner to 49ers: Twitter Reacts as DE Is Selected in 2016 NFL Draft

Joseph ZuckerApr 28, 2016

For the second year in a row, the San Francisco 49ers selected a former member of the Oregon Ducks in the first round of the NFL draft.

In 2015, the Niners targeted the interior of the defensive line, adding Arik Armstead. On Thursday, they grabbed DeForest Buckner with the seventh overall pick:

ESPN's Todd McShay was a fan of the selection:

Detroit Lions guard Geoff Schwartz also praised Buckner's technique:

Here's how the rest of social media reacted to the pick:

Buckner is a great fit for San Francisco's 3-4 defense. Even if the former Duck doesn't start right away, he can at the very least be in the defensive end rotation for the Niners.

His sack totals climbed from 7.5 through his first three seasons at Oregon to 10.5 in his senior year, so Buckner could have some potential as a pass-rusher as well. Strength and depth along the front seven was one of the 49ers' greatest assets when they were among the NFC's best teams, and drafting Buckner helps the team return to that.

This was the first draft pick of the head coach Chip Kelly era in San Francisco. Kelly's poor personnel moves were his undoing with the Philadelphia Eagles, but he doesn't wield the same kind of power with the Niners.

No matter who made the final call, both Kelly and general manager Trent Baalke will be judged on Buckner's success or failure, especially with Baalke's poor track record in recent drafts.
