2016 NFL Mock Draft: Updated Predictions for Rounds 2 and 3

Danny WebsterApr 29, 2016

Thirty-one picks down, a whole lot more to go.

Round 1 of the 2016 NFL draft was not short on shock factor and intrigue.

The Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles kept everything normal with Jared Goff and Carson Wentz going with the top two picks, respectively. But all of a sudden, Joey Bosa was a San Diego Charger and Ezekiel Elliott was a Dallas Cowboy.

Alabama Players Will Go Early in Round 2

This is the stat that will blow your mind.

The Alabama Crimson Tide had five prospects in CBS Sports' big board ranked in the top 25. Only one Alabama player went in the first round. Ryan Kelly is the new center of the Indianapolis Colts.

This went under the radar. Compare that to Ohio State, which had five guys go in the first round and all in the first 20 picks.

Alabama will rule Round 2, starting on the defensive side. Expect defensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson to come off the board at No. 33 to the Tennessee Titans. After getting their new offensive tackle Jack Conklin, the Titans can grab one of the more underrated defensive tackles in the draft. He's only 21 years old and is a great run-stopper. With time he can develop into a dominant pass-rusher at his size (6'4", 307 pounds).

GLENDALE, AZ - JANUARY 11: A'Shawn Robinson #86 of the Alabama Crimson Tide celebrates after defeating the Clemson Tigers in the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship Game at University of Phoenix Stadium on January 11, 2016 in Glendale, Ar

At Nos. 37 and 38 with the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, two more Alabama guys will come off the board. Jarran Reed, the other Tide defensive tackle, will go to Kansas City and be a good backup to Dontari Poe. At 307 pounds, he's another terrific run-stopper. There's a chance the Chiefs can move him over to defensive end in that 3-4 scheme, so Kansas City will have all the mass at their disposal.

And after taking Jalen Ramsey with the fifth pick, the Jaguars can address defense with the addition of Reggie Ragland, the Alabama linebacker who might be the best tackler in this draft. Jacksonville continues to build its defense, and adding a guy like Ragland with his quickness and IQ is a necessity for the Jaguars.

To round it out, reigning Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry should go early in Round 2 as well, to the New York Giants. The Cowboys' drafting Elliott took the Giants away from a first-round running back. Whether they really wanted one or not will never be revealed, but they need help in the backfield.

Henry is a workhorse who carried the ball 395 times a year ago. He ran for 2,219 yards in the process. But somehow, Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt believes it wouldn't be a surprise if another Alabama running back went before Henry:

The stats tell the story. Henry needs to be taken early, and the Giants would be wise to get some rushing help for Eli Manning.

Devontae Booker to Miami

With Henry off the board to the Giants, it'll be time for the Miami Dolphins to find a replacement for Lamar Miller.

The Dolphins may have gotten the steal of the draft with Ole Miss offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil, who dropped out of the top 10 due to a video that was posted on his Twitter account of him smoking marijuana with a gas mask on. If Tunsil's claims of that being an old video are true, Miami is in good shape here.

Miami's next step is to grab a running back to replace Miller, the new Houston Texan. Henry and Elliott are off the board, but Devontae Booker out of Utah would be a solid pick at No. 42.

There's some concern with Booker. He suffered a knee injury last November. He has trouble holding on to the ball, fumbling nine times in two years. His 40 time is not great at 4.56, and he needs to get better at pass protection.

Miami is the perfect spot for him. That 40 time needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Booker didn't take part in any type of football activity until the NFL combine. He looks a lot faster on game film, especially when he gets into open space. He has a strong upper body that allows him to finish runs after contact. That's something that Miller didn't possess.

Miller was faster and more of a one-cut back, but Booker is someone who can be an every-down back and be relied on for goal-line situations. Mike Mayock from NFL Network feels Booker is the No. 2 running back, so even he sees the potential. He also caught 80 passes in two seasons.

If there's one thing new Dolphins head coach Adam Gase knows, it's how to use running backs well in the passing game. He can improve his pass-blocking while still being a top-notch weapon in Miami's offense. He may turn 24 years old in May, but that age comes with patience and a high IQ. Booker would be a solid replacement for Miller.

Browns Will Address Quarterback in Round 3

The Cleveland Browns could have used the No. 2 or even No. 8 pick to get a quarterback but chose not to. Instead, Cleveland went with Baylor wide receiver Corey Coleman with the 15th pick in a trade with Tennessee.

Cleveland has two third-round picks to work with, each coming in the first 14 picks. After Connor Cook comes off the board (I have him going to the Buffalo Bills in the second round), the quarterbacks should be plentiful by Round 3.

Among those names are Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones, Mississippi State's Dak Prescott and Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg. All three should be available by the time the Browns are on the clock with the second pick of the third round.

Prescott seems a surer bet than Hackenberg and Jones. Hackenberg has the build to be great, but his accuracy has dropped significantly since his freshman year (58.9 percent to 53.5). Jones is still going to be a project and will need at least two or three years to develop into an NFL quarterback.

Prescott, meanwhile, has tools coaches can work with and is the kind of quarterback head coach Hue Jackson would like to mold. He's 6'2" with a wide 226-pound frame, has good speed and is accurate when he gets his feet set. Prescott's only issue was that he was sacked 32 times last year. He completed 66.2 percent of his passes and also can escape the pocket and avoid pressure. He's shown flashes of Donovan McNabb.

And if the Browns don't take him, there's a team in need of a quarterback of the future. Texas will surely grab Prescott in the third, per David Moore of the Dallas Morning News:

Prescott has the tools to be great and has the physical build to be one of the mid-round gems of this draft. Cleveland is in need of a quarterback. It makes sense.
