Ezekiel Elliott to Cowboys: Twitter Reacts as RB Is Selected in 2016 NFL Draft
The Dallas Cowboys are a magnet for attention as America's Team. In prime position to make a big splash in the first round of the 2016 NFL draft, Dallas didn't disappoint, selecting Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott with the No. 4 overall pick Thursday.
Twitter promptly and appropriately erupted following the Cowboys' marquee draft choice.
Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram wondered what newly acquired Dallas running back Alfred Morris thought of the pick:
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' reaction was likely very different:
Star Dallas receiver Dez Bryant embraced Elliott's arrival:
BlackSportsOnline figured Elliott's unique wardrobe choice had something to do with his desire to wind up in Dallas:
ProFootballTalk.com's Zac Jackson noticed how usually stoic Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer reacted when he saw Elliott come off the board—and Joey Bosa go to the San Diego Chargers third overall:
Here's the best of the rest:
Elliott racked up 3,699 rushing yards and 41 touchdowns over the past two seasons, along with 55 receptions. Quarterbacks ran often in Ohio State's offense, and Elliott blocked like a fullback in those situations.
The 20-year-old has a thickly built frame at 6'0" and 225 pounds, per his measurements at the NFL Scouting Combine. He also ran a 4.47-second 40-yard dash, showing off his long, breakaway speed.
Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, 36, has to be thrilled to have a magnificent runner in Elliott to complement him as he approaches the end of his career. In turn, Elliott must be pumped to play with such a high-level QB and to run behind one of the NFL's premier offensive lines.
The seamless change of direction, patience and vision to capitalize on running lanes and sheer power and attitude Elliott runs with make him a surefire every-down NFL back. One can only imagine what he's bound to do behind a loaded Cowboys front.
No running back went in the first round of the draft for a two-year span until 2015, when Todd Gurley ended the skid by going 10th overall to the then-St. Louis Rams. Like Gurley, Elliott is special enough to earn such a massive investment.
