Detroit Lions Mock Draft and Big Board: Updated Day 2 Predictions

Brandon AlisogluApr 28, 2016

Ask and you shall receive.

Detroit Lions fans spent the past four months begging general manager Bob Quinn to do something about the offensive line. Geoff Schwartz in free agency had been the only answer thus far, and it wasn't satisfying.

Now, Quinn has used his first-ever selection in Detroit to shore up the right side of the line. Taylor Decker will immediately add strength and potential at right tackle

That's a good start. Unfortunately, the Lions still have other holes that have to be addressed, so let's see how the rest of the draft could shake out.

Top-100 Board

1 of 7

Offensive tackle may not seem like a huge need now, but don't forget that the Lions only have one of their top four tackles under contract for the 2017 season. And he's going to be a rookie this year.

This big board is solely based on the Lions roster and needs. Through one round, both have changed but only slightly.

Round 2

2 of 7

Round 2, Pick 46: Nick Martin, C/OG, Notre Dame

Detroit addressed one huge need with the first pick, so why not keep a good thing rolling?

Travis Swanson didn't acquit himself well in his first year as a starter. It's possible he can improve, but the jump he must make is significant, and burning a second-round pick on an upgrade will prove a worthy investment.

Nick Martin is rated as the best pass-protecting center in the draft by Pro Football Focus' draft guide. In fact, he only allowed five total quarterback pressures all year, which is five less than 18th overall pick Ryan Kelly.

Martin is also considered an intelligent player, which should help the entire offensive line come together. He might need some help in the rushing game, but Larry Warford and whoever starts at left guard will find a better running mate in Martin than Swanson.

Round 3

3 of 7

Round 3, Pick 95: Miles Killebrew, SS, Southern Utah

Detroit can get by with their current crop of linebackers and possibly survive with their defensive backs.

But the defense could take a giant leap forward with a "Money" linebacker, who is expected to attack the running game like a linebacker and the passing game like a defensive back. Think Deone Bucannon for the Arizona Cardinals, a draft favorite of this writer last season. Check out Erik Schlitt's explanation of the position on Detroit Jock City for more information.

Killebrew fits that mold down to a kicking tee. In fact, Killebrew threw up three more bench reps and jumped 1.5" higher than Bucannon, and they posted similar three-cone and 20-yard shuttle times.

Bucannon is the better player overall, and Killebrew probably needs time before you can fully trust him—if ever—in the passing game. But he's great value in the third round and fits a need.

Round 4

4 of 7

Round 4, Pick 111: Willie Beavers, OT, Western Michigan

It wouldn't have mattered if the Lions had taken an offensive tackle in the first two days. Detroit can afford to spend liberally on a position that has one "sure thing," and Riley Reiff is an average-to-slightly-above-average player with one year left on his contract.

The current regime shouldn't have much faith in Cornelius Lucas or Corey Robinson growing into long-term solutions. Plus, Geoff Schwartz and Michael Ola are both set to hit the market with Reiff next offseason.

Beavers gives the team its second-highest drafted tackle since Reiff and a possible starter down the road. He's athletic enough to play either side but probably won't crack the starting lineup in 2016 without an injury.

Round 5

5 of 7

Round 5, Pick 151: David Morgan, TE, UTSA

Morgan adds value at this pick and addresses a sneaky need on the team.

Brandon Pettigrew is coming off another knee injury and could be released soon. And nobody holds on to Tim Wright for long because upgrades can be readily found.

Morgan is one such upgrade. He's athletic, catches the ball well with his hands, provides help in the red zone and is a willing blocker.

Round 5, Pick 169: Brandon Doughty, QB, Western Kentucky

Detroit will be looking for a quarterback to help Matthew Stafford succeed more so than a backup who could win a few games should Stafford go down. If Bob Quinn wants that guy, he can call Brian Hoyer.

Doughty is well regarded for his intelligence and understanding of systems. While he may not show off those smarts when facing a pass rush, he can advise Stafford from the safety of the sideline.

Round 6

6 of 7

Round 6, Pick 191: Nick Kwiatkoski, LB, West Virginia

The Stephen Tulloch train that smacked a downtrodden franchise in the face will be leaving soon, creating a hole at middle linebacker.

No, Kwiatkoski won't fill his spot. He'll take Tahir Whitehead's former post as a reserve against the run and spend most of his time playing special teams. Kwiatkoski has a renowned work ethic and tackling technique that should add value to the roster.

Round 6, Pick 202: Lawrence Thomas, DE, Michigan State

Detroit needs to add serious defensive end depth before training camp. Thomas accomplishes that goal and could easily sneak into the top-four rotation by Week 1.

The former Spartan is massive (6'3", 286 lbs) and moves well. He needs to develop a couple of pass-rushing moves to become more than an edge-setting end.

Round 6, Pick 210: Deon Bush, S, Miami

It's more about the player available than the position.

Bush will fill the same position as Miles Killebrew, but without as much success. He's strictly a special teamer and can help by playing closer to the line of scrimmage when called upon. He would need an impressive preseason to stay off the practice squad.

Round 7

7 of 7

Round 7, Pick 236: Alonzo Russell, WR, Toledo

Russell doesn't carry special teams expertise, but he can battle with defensive backs in the red zone, giving him enough value for a seventh-round selection.

Russell is 6'4" and does well to high-point the ball. Now it's a question of whether he can prove he has the other necessary skills to make the roster.
