Ander Herrera Fields Transfer Questions on Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, More

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera answered a selection of questions from supporters on Twitter on Wednesday evening, discussing Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo, Barcelona star Lionel Messi, team-mate David De Gea and Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane.

Herrera encouraged his 1.44 million Twitter followers to get in touch to kill some time and answered a number of questions you’d anticipate a footballer would usually steer well clear of.

Talk quickly turned to former United player Ronaldo, who the Old Trafford crowd still sing about to this day despite the fact he left the club for Real in 2009.

The Red Devils playmaker admitted the prospect of Ronaldo donning the red jersey again is something which appeals to him:

While manager Louis van Gaal did admit he was interested in signing the Portuguese earlier this season, per BBC Sport, it’d be a big surprise if this one happened.

The 31-year-old continues to prove his worth for Real Madrid with plenty of goals, often hauling his side over the line in contests.

Indeed, Los Blancos were blunted without their talisman against Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, serving a warning to any Madridistas who may feel a sale is a good idea.

Messi also came up a lot in conversation. When asked about who his favourite footballer of all time was and which player he’d love to play alongside in the future, the Argentina international was the answer on both occasions for Herrera.

In another response, he insisted he hoped De Gea remained at United despite links with a move to Real Madrid:

Sky Sports’ Spanish football expert Guillem Balague claimed the Liga side have been keeping tabs on the goalkeeper this season. He came close to joining Los Blancos last summer before a deal fell through in the final embers of the transfer window.

“He is the number one in the world,” said Herrera of De Gea after he saved a penalty in United’s FA Cup semi-final win against Everton on Saturday, per Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News. “In England you know that but in the rest of the world they think they have better goalkeepers, but I don’t think so.”

Herrera was also prompted to give his opinion on whether he preferred Kane, who has enjoyed another tremendous season at White Hart Lane, or Manchester City man Sergio Aguero.

There were some intriguing insights from the United midfielder and the kind of exchanges which fans always find fascinating. And most Red Devils supporters would certainly love to see De Gea stick around and Ronaldo come back to the club. Both coming to fruition look unlikely at this juncture, though.

Herrera himself has endured a season of ups and downs, never able to cement a regular first-team spot at Old Trafford.

Still, his technical ability and eye for a pass have made him a popular player with the club’s worldwide fanbase. Taking time out to answer questions like these will aid him in accruing more favour.
