2016 NFL Draft: Twitter Reacts to Eagles' Trade for Browns' No. 2 Pick
The 2016 NFL draft was shaken up for the second time in a week Wednesday when the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns completed a blockbuster trade that left the Twitter world buzzing.
As announced by the Eagles, Philly moved up to the No. 2 overall pick in the draft in exchange for a bevy of 2016 and 2017 selections:
The Browns loaded up with a number of draft picks to address a roster that has plenty of holes to fill, which may ultimately prove to be the best move for the franchise moving forward.
Even so, ESPN's Mark Schlereth isn't convinced they'll take full advantage:
Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald can also see things going south for Cleveland despite what looks to be a strong trade on paper:
PFTCommenter quipped that the Browns' recent draft history suggests that getting more picks isn't necessarily a good thing:
"Smart move by the Browns to trade back so they can draft lots of worse players to fit there football philosophy
— PFTCommenter (@PFTCommenter) April 20, 2016"
Former NFL Pro Bowl wide receiver Chad Johnson attempted to gauge how Browns fans feel about the current direction of the organization:
With Cleveland now sitting at pick No. 8 in the first round of the 2016 NFL draft, it is unlikely it will select a quarterback, such as Jared Goff or Carson Wentz.
The Browns have a long-running penchant for cycling through quarterbacks at a rapid pace, which led Shooter McGavin to assume that Goff and Wentz aren't at all broken up about missing out on a chance to play in Cleveland:
While the Browns opting against selecting a quarterback of the future atop the draft may rub some fans the wrong way, Joe Buscaglia of WKBW in Buffalo, New York, suggested that a savior may already be in place:
Robert Griffin III is in line to be the starter, assuming he beats out Josh McCown. Black Sports Online imagines that fact makes RGIII quite happy:
The same cannot necessarily be said for Eagles quarterbacks Sam Bradford and Chase Daniel, however.
The overarching assumption is that Philadelphia will take Goff or Wentz, depending upon what the Los Angeles Rams do at No. 1, which flies in the face of what the organization did during the offseason, per ESPN's Andrew Brandt:
"Eagles just agreed to pay Bradford $22M minimum and to pay Daniel $12M minimum. Now using valuable resources to acquire their replacement.
— Andrew Brandt (@AndrewBrandt) April 20, 2016"
Tyler Dunne of the Buffalo News offered a fitting and potentially accurate GIF of how Bradford and Daniel may have reacted when they heard the news:
NFL Network's Marc Istook even provided an actual Bradford reaction from last season that couldn't possibly be more apropos:
While many figure a quarterback would come off the board at No. 2 regardless of whether the Browns stayed there or traded out, Wednesday's deal certainly shakes things up at other spots.
Cleveland is now such a wild card at No. 8 that Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times described the plight of those who create mock drafts for a living:
"Looks like I need to do another mock draft ...
— Adam Jahns (@adamjahns) April 20, 2016"
The complexion of the 2016 NFL draft has changed completely in recent days, and the same can be said for the direction of the Browns and Eagles.
The true impact of the trade cannot accurately be judged for several years, and the fact that the initial reaction is all over the board suggests that nobody is quite sure what to make of the surprising deal.
