WWE SmackDown Spoilers: Complete Results and Analysis for April 21

Erik BeastonApr 19, 2016

With the eyes of the wrestling world on AJ Styles following Raw and Tuesday, as WWE presented its SmackDown tapings in London, The Phenomenal One wasted little time addressing his relationship with Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows, and their beatdown of Roman Reigns. Thanks to our friends at WrestlingInc.com, you don't have to wait to find out what the Superstars of Vince McMahon's company have in store for fans.

Is he behind the dangerous duo's arrival in WWE, or is Styles as innocent as he claims, forced to watch as his friends run amuck, making enemies of themselves and him?

It was a question explored further as the former Ring of Honor, TNA and New Japan star joined intercontinental champion The Miz and Maryse for the latest edition of Miz TV.

Ryback sought revenge following his disappointing loss to United States champion Kalisto at WrestleMania 32. Tuesday, he battled the masked luchador in a non-title match, determined to catapult himself back into championship contention.

Add to that action featuring Dean Ambrose, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho, and you have another episode of the Thursday night broadcast chock full of talented wrestlers and continuing the build to May 1 and Payback.

Results

  • The Miz and Maryse kicked off the show with this week's Miz TV. Guest AJ Styles pleaded innocence in the beatdown of Roman Reigns by Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows. Eventually, Styles vs. Miz was announced for later in the show.
  • Ryback defeated United States champion Kalisto in a non-title match.
  • Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin never began as The Lone Wolf left The Showoff lying.
  • Styles defeated The Miz.
  • Backstage, Gallows and Anderson revealed that they will make their debut on Raw against The Usos.
  • Paige and Natalya defeated Naomi and Tamina.
  • R-Truth defeated Fandango.
  • Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady cut a promo on the Tag Team Tournament finals, only to be interrupted by The Vaudevillains. They traded barbs.
  • Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens defeated Sami Zayn and Dean Ambrose.

Analysis

Ambrose, Owens, Zayn and Jericho have been intertwined to the point that matches and segments are becoming stale—especially when there is no plausible explanation for one of the feuds (Ambrose-Jericho) and a drop-off in heat in the other (Zayn-Owens). Another tag match between the four means little and does nothing to further the feud in any measurable way.

Is there anyone who did not fully expect to see Styles square off with The Miz after it was announced that he would appear on the intercontinental champion's talk show? While predictable in its setup, Styles and Miz have spectacular in-ring chemistry, so the match should more than make up for the lackluster booking.

The rest of the show looks very hit-and-miss in nature, with its quality determined by the execution come Thursday night. Is it worth tuning in for? Certainly. SmackDown has been a fun show, even more so than Raw, since the move to USA Network. This should not change this week, even if the importance is diminished significantly in comparison to Raw.
