Round 1 Gets Under Way
Qualifier Skugor got off to a excellent start against Cervantes when he claimed an early break, but he was unable to build further momentum, as the Spaniard quickly hit back to go 3-2 up.
Errors crept into the Croatian's game—he'd made 13 unforced by the end of the first set, according to TennisTV—and soon enough, Cervantes had drawn first blood quite comfortably.
The world No. 57 played some excellent tennis in the second set, manipulating Skugor around the court before applying a powerful winner down the line, per Tennis TV:
Cervantes quickly went a break up and produced a real moment of magic to prevent his opponent from breaking back:
From there, he only needed the match to follow serve, and it did just that, with neither coming close to a break for the remainder of the contest.
That match was wrapped up in less than one hour, 20 minutes, but Burgos needed more than two as he came from a set down to beat Kukushkin. His service let him down in the first set—according to Pro Tennis Live, he won just half the points played on his first serve—but a much-improved performance saw the world No. 49 claim the next two sets with ease.

Chung was unable to mount a comeback after he lost the first set to Jaziri despite being 40-15 up at 4-3 in the second set. Had the Korean won the game, he would have had a commanding lead and almost certainly a lifeline back into the match, but he crumbled under the pressure and lost three successive games.
Evgeny Donskoy showed remarkable resilience to save a set point in his second set with Facundo Bagnis, and he ultimately claimed their match in straight sets on a tiebreaker, while Radek Stepanek was fortunate his wastefulness did not cost him against Santiago Giraldo—he was able to take only three of his 14 break-point opportunities, but that proved enough.
When the likes of Kei Nishikori and Rafael Nadal enter the competition, he'll need to be much more ruthless if he's to progress far.
