In the Eastern Conference, the New York Islanders had control of their own destiny after an overtime loss against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday. With 100 points, they were one point behind the New York Rangers for third place in the Metropolitan Division.

But a 5-2 loss on Sunday against the Philadelphia Flyers meant that the Islanders will be slotted in the first wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs instead of being the No. 3 seed in the Metropolitan Division.

However, the loss could have worked out in their favor.

Instead of facing the red-hot Pittsburgh Penguins, who have won 15 of their last 17 games, the Islanders will play the Atlantic Division-winning Florida Panthers, a team that's made the playoffs once in the past 15 years.

The Rangers will play the Penguins in the first round instead.

The Flyers clinched their spot in the postseason with a win against the scorching-hot Penguins on Saturday.

Their win knocked the Boston Bruins out of the final Eastern Conference playoff spot after they failed to show up in a 6-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators.

Philadelphia has to play the Presidents' Trophy-winning Washington Capitals, who have been nearly unbeatable this season with 120 points.

Because the Bruins lost, the Detroit Red Wings managed to back their way into the payoffs despite losing to the Rangers on Saturday. Both teams were tied with 93 points, but the Red Wings have 39 regulation and overtime wins, compared to Boston's 38. Therefore, the Red Wings earned the No. 3 seed in the Atlantic Division.

Detroit will have play a Tampa Bay Lightning team that will be without Steven Stamkos, who underwent surgery for a blood clot in his arm April 4.

The Western Conference has had its eight playoff teams settled for some time, as there isn't as much parity. However, it does have five of the last six Stanley Cup winners in the Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings.

Chicago finished in third place in a loaded Central Division that features the Dallas Stars and St. Louis Blues, who entered Saturday with 107 points apiece.

The Capitals thrashed St. Louis, 5-1, while the Stars came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Nashville Predators to take the division and the No. 1 overall seed in the West.

Those results mean the Blues will play the Blackhawks, the team that knocked them out of the first round in 2014.

With 109 points, Dallas will play the Minnesota Wild, the only playoff team in the league that had fewer than 90 points this season.

The Anaheim Ducks wrapped up the Pacific Division on Sunday night with a 2-0 win over the Capitals, their second win in as many nights.

The Los Angeles Kings had a chance to wrap up the title Saturday, but they lost to the Winnipeg Jets in a shootout. L.A. had a one-point lead over the Ducks after they beat the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.

Anaheim will take on the Nashville Predators, while the Kings meet the San Jose Sharks in the first round of the playoffs.

It will all begin Wednesday, as one of the most exciting postseasons in all of sports will grip fans for almost two months before climaxing with the Stanley Cup Final, which will begin June 1.
