The new deal ensures that Demps will continue his second tenure with the Texans after he spent three seasons with the team from 2010-2012 before rejoining it in 2015. Demps played with the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Giants, respectively, in 2013 and 2014.
He took to Twitter after he signed his deal on Thursday:
Demps started a career-high 13 games and recorded 61 total tackles last season with Houston, which was a welcome sight given the struggles of Rahim Moore.
Moore played in just seven games last season, his first of a three-year contract. The Texans released him in March.
Demps provided a veteran presence in the secondary to go along with the emergence of 23-year-old Andre Hal and 27-year-old Eddie Pleasant.
Before 2015, Pleasant didn't have a single interception in his first three seasons, while Hal had just one year under his belt.
Last season, though, the two combined for six interceptions and injected some new life into Houston's safety position, which at first looked like it would have to rely on Demps. The 30-year-old showed it wasn't just the passing game safeties needed to pay attention to, via the NFL:
With Demps' return, Houston ensures the three safeties will stick together for at least another year as he can continue to mentor the up-and-coming players.
They'll have to be on their game too, as they will be competing in an offensively talented AFC South featuring the return of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck from an injury-riddled 2015 season, the blooming Blake Bortles with the Jacksonville Jaguars and 22-year-old signal-caller Marcus Mariota, who will look to build on a solid rookie campaign with the Tennessee Titans.
