Real Madrid Transfer News: Robert Lewandowski Discusses Future Amid Exit Rumours

Tom SunderlandApr 6, 2016

Robert Lewandowski has refused to pledge his loyalty to Bayern Munich amid speculation the club is trying to convince the Poland striker to pen new terms at the Allianz Arena following interest from Real Madrid.

Speaking to Sky Sport News this week, Lewandowski was quizzed on the reports of a contract extension in Munich, but the attacker claimed his future "is not really an issue right now," appearing relaxed on the matter (h/t Goal's Stefan Coerts):

"

I do not have a specific plan for my future. I do not have a career path set out or a plan where I want to play next.

I am feeling very good at Bayern and my future is not really an issue right now. I do not feel any pressure [that other clubs are keeping tabs on me]. I do not have to think about what to do next, but I have to stay calm. Winning titles with Bayern is my top priority now. I just want to help the team and I am giving my all.

The 27-year-old has more than three years remaining on his current deal with the Bundesliga leaders, but it's understood Die Roten are keen to extend their player's terms in order to ward off outside interest.

Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer was recently asked about Lewandowski's future at the club, per German outlet DW Sports, and commented the club is "optimistic" about the situation:

Pep Guardiola will step down from the Bayern Munich helm in place of impending arrival Carlo Ancelotti this summer, and the Italian will want to have Lewandowski among his ranks in the long term.

Since arriving at the Allianz Arena on a free transfer from Borussia Dortmund in 2014, the Pole has netted 61 goals in 90 appearances for Bayern, an average of one goal every 1.48 games.

However, Los Merengues have their own reliable source of goals in the form of Karim Benzema, and Yahoo's Andrew Gaffney called it "bizarre" that the Frenchman goes so underrated by some:

Lewandowski's first season with Bayern went down as a major success after he scored 25 goals in 49 games, but he's blown that ratio out of the park with a record of 36 goals in 41 games so far this term.

The official Bayern Munich Twitter account posted footage of the kind of cool and collected character they're hoping to keep at the club for years to come:

Perhaps one of Lewandowski's most notable attributes is his fitness and ability to stave off injury, having played an average of 46 games per season in the past six seasons, a remarkable figure considering how key he's been at Bayern and previous club Dortmund.

However, Lewandowski will enter "contract games" at his own risk after Bayern chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told German newspaper Kicker the club won't "play" against his agent (h/t Goal's Coerts): "I am not commenting on Lewandowski's potential renewal. We are not joining his agent [in playing] games. Taking a look at his contract length gives us reasons to be relaxed about the future."

Those words suggest Rummenigge may feel Lewandowski's agent is merely opening up talk of a potential departure in order to squeeze the best deal for his client, a common move in today's market.

With more than three years remaining on his deal, Bayern have no immediate concerns on their plate, but with a club of Real's stature hovering, the German giants can't rest safe just yet.
