Andre Rison's Son Hunter to Michigan State: Spartans Land 4-Star WR Prospect

Daniel KramerApr 1, 2016

Wide receiver Hunter Rison, the son of former All-Pro NFL receiver Andre Rison, announced his commitment to the Michigan State Spartans on Friday.

His father also played for Michigan State.

Hunter Rison is a 4-star recruit, per 247Sports, and had scholarship offers from 20 schools. He was reportedly set to visit the campus Friday as well, per Matt Dorsey of Rivals.com.

He first declared his commitment in June but backed off in November. On Friday, he issued a statement via Twitter elaborating on his back-and-forth thoughts:

"

I am forever grateful and blessed to reach this point. This was not an easy decision, but I know I have made the right one. I’d like to let everyone know that I am honored to commit to Michigan State University… It’s just where I belong, simple as that. I took a step back from my commitment earlier because I needed to..I don’t think anybody can truly make that decision as early as I did, but I accept the hate for it. In all [honesty], it’s not about me anyways..it’s about the team. MSU deserves to win a national title and I just want to help in any way I can.

"

Andre Rison was one of the most decorated receivers in Michigan State history, playing four seasons in East Lansing from 1985 to 1988. He’s second in career yards (2,992), third in receptions (146) and tied for fourth in touchdowns (20) on MSU's all-time lists.

The Spartans have seven receivers on their roster who could still be with the team by the time Hunter Rison is on campus.

Who will be under center at that point is a big question mark, though. Rising senior Tyler O’Connor appears to be in line to replace Connor Cook in 2016, and rising junior Damion Terry could take the mantle the following year.

Under head coach Mark Dantonio, the Spartans have become one of the sport's regular heavyweights, reaching the College Football Playoff last year. Hunter Rison’s comments indicate his top goal is winning a national title, and that could become a realistic ambition with the Spartans.
