Manchester United vs. Everton: Louis Van Gaal's Key Pre-Match Presser Quotes

Gianni VerschuerenApr 1, 2016

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal still believes his team can finish the Premier League season in the top three, and he wants his players to play at the level they achieved in the derby win over Manchester City when they take on Everton on Sunday.

As reported by Samuel Luckhurst, James Dixon and Rob Pollard of the Manchester Evening News, the Dutchman noted his team is also still active in the FA Cup, so there's plenty left to play for:

"

Still we are capable of being in the top three in the league at this moment and we believe in that, the players believe in that.

We can also win the FA Cup, so we have a lot to fight for. I hope that we show it already in the first match because that is the most important match as you have to continue what you have done against City.

The Red Devils enter Week 32 of the Premier League campaign in sixth place, just a single point behind fourth-placed City and five behind Arsenal. With three wins out of their last four matches, United have been in better form than either side.

Everton have struggled of late and have fallen well behind in the race for a UEFA Europa League ticket for next season, but they remain a dangerous, attacking team capable of beating just about anyone in England when they're on form.

Per the club's official Twitter account, Van Gaal acknowledged the Toffees won't just gift United three points:

Before Sunday's match, one of the stands at Old Trafford will be renamed after club legend Sir Bobby Charlton, per United's Twitter account. Van Gaal reserved plenty of praise for the midfielder, calling him his “idol” growing up:

The international break once again reared its ugly head for the Red Devils, as midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger missed Germany's friendlies after he picked up a knock in training.

And while the return of Luke Shaw is fantastic news for United, the latest on Schweinsteiger wasn't as great, per Paul Hirst of the Times:

The Dutchman was also asked about recent comments from Sir Alex Ferguson, who told United fans to show a little more patience and be more supportive of Van Gaal, per the Press Association (h/t the Guardian).

Unsurprisingly, Van Gaal agreed with what the former manager said, per Chris Winterburn of Metro:

As the Premier League enters the final stretch toward the end of the season, it will be pivotal for the Red Devils to start their first match after the international break on the right foot.

With Arsenal hosting Watford, Manchester City visiting Bournemouth and and West Ham United hosting Crystal Palace, the teams ahead of United aren't expected to drop many points, so a win against Everton is needed to avoid losing any ground in the race for a UEFA Champions League spot.
