WWE WrestleMania 32: Matches Sure to Cause Controversy Among Fans

Ryan DilbertMar 28, 2016

The marquee bouts at WWE WrestleMania 32 will generate mass discussion, disagreement and dissension. A polarizing WWE championship challenger and part-timers standing in the spotlight will ensure that WrestleMania's biggest matches will leave the fanbase split.

Count on Roman Reigns, Shane McMahon and Team B.A.D. to thrive at the biggest show of the year but for the results of their showdowns to spark debate aplenty.

That's expected at any WWE event, but the scale of WrestleMania adds to it. Expectations are tremendously high. Wins and losses feel far more significant on this grand stage.

Add that to the fact that Reigns enters The Showcase of the Immortals in an ongoing struggle to win over fans, as his position in the company doesn't match his reaction. That will lead to a crowd even more contentious than usual watching on at AT&T Stadium on April 3.

Triple H vs. Roman Reigns

Never mind that at the close of 2015, Reigns looked like he finally had his detractors cheering him on. A vocal portion of the crowd is again rejecting him.

The boos are louder in some cities in others, but they are audible everywhere. Fans continue to push back against Reigns' rise, making it clear they would rather have someone else in his spot.

That has many predicting a negative reaction for the babyface in Dallas. Mike Tedesco of WrestleView.com wrote, "WrestleMania is going to be ugly for Roman Reigns."

This was the case last year, but WWE deftly inserted Seth Rollins into the bout. The story shifted from the failing Reigns experiment to Rollins' cunning being on display.

There will be no Rollins to plug in this year. And it looks as if the company is intent on simply having Reigns overcome Triple H and take his spot on the WWE throne.

WWE knows full well what happens when it anoints a persona non grata. The end of the Royal Rumble in both 2014 and 2015 created a storm of fan unrest.

That's likely to happen again if WWE follows the script here. Reigns taking a beating, making a comeback and getting a clean win is poised to be a story the crowd jeers.

But it's not as if extending Triple H's reign is going to elicit a favorable reaction either. Seeing the part-timer keep hold of the title will have some claiming that The Game "buried" Reigns.

It will take some major creativity for WWE to avoid the bout earning a collective thumbs down.

Divas Tag Match

While not official, WrestleMania is poised to add a Divas tag team match to the card. With Lana, Team B.A.D., Summer Rae and Emma joining forces, those heels look ready to face Team Bella and company.

Having so many pieces to this puzzle will inevitably leave some fans unhappy. Big Paige supporters, Naomi's fanbase and those pulling for Brie Bella can't all be thrilled with how the spotlight is divvied up. WWE is going to have to choose whom to showcase here, and judging by how much airtime she's been getting lately, bet on that person being Lana.

And there won't be a whole lot of match time to disperse.

With title matches, bouts that will decide Raw's future and the WrestleMania debut of guys like AJ Styles and Kevin Owens on the way, this thrown-together clash won't be a high priority. It is the likeliest bout to be cut short to make room for all of WrestleMania's spectacle.

Former NXT creative assistant Rob Naylor believes that this women's match, not the Divas Championship match, is sure to be a truncated one:

He's bound to be right. Per ProFightDB.com, the last two women's matches at WrestleMania didn't go past the seven-minute mark. Sasha Banks vs. Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte is bound to buck that trend. Lana's battle with Team Bella is instead in position to be an insubstantial interlude between marquee bouts.

Those pining to see Brie get a big moment before her career wraps up won't be satisfied. The same will true for those longing for Paige to be more than just a background player again.

Shane McMahon vs. Undertaker

McMahon's Hell in a Cell battle with The Deadman has WWE trapped in a booking dilemma. Choosing either man to win is bound to create controversy.

If Shane-O-Mac topples the immortal Undertaker at the event where he has long been all but unbeatable, expect some groans. Not only would that have McMahon accomplish what Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Ric Flair and Batista couldn't do, thanks to a new stipulation, it would mean the end of the WrestleMania road for Undertaker.

That seems unfeasible. Bleacher Report's Dan Pecoraro asked, "Do we really think Undertaker is going to have his last match at WrestleMania against a non-wrestler?"

But that's only one of two options for WWE heading into this battle. The other is to have The Phenom win, which would keep the tiresome Authority in power and make all this talk of McMahon taking over Raw for naught.

Plus, with how much WWE is promoting it, McMahon vs. Undertaker may end up going last at WrestleMania.

That decision would irk some watching. A pair of part-timers headlining over the emerging Reigns or the beloved Dean Ambrose wouldn't sit well with some. The same would go for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship not being the featured attraction.

Hall of Famer Jim Ross is among those against the idea of McMahon vs. Undertaker being the main event. He wrote on his blog, "To not close with the WWE title lessens the championship in my opinion, and that should never be allowed to happen."

WWE can't be confident, though, that Reigns' clash with Triple H won't end up in a flood of boos. And that's hardly the image the company wants to end WrestleMania with, unless of course The Big Dog turns heel during the course of the match.

That's WWE's best bet to turn the existing issues with Reigns into a positive, to turn controversy into storyline fodder.
