Eagles Willing to Deal Mathews for 'Right Price'

Monday, March 7

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the buzz on Mathews and added that 2014 NFL rushing champion DeMarco Murray has also been placed on the block. Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Murray was in fact traded to the Tennessee Titans.

Mathews has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career. He thrived when he was fit to play in 2015, though, racking up 539 yards rushing on 5.1 yards per carry and six touchdowns in 13 games.

Considering Mathews' production from last season and his relatively inexpensive price tag—he's entering the second year of a three-year, $11 million deal—it seems less likely he'll be on the move.

Given his history of being dinged up and the absence of a bulkier ball-carrier on the roster sans Murray, though, Philadelphia has a tricky decision as it mulls whether to sell high on Mathews (6'0", 220 lbs) before the 2016 campaign.

NJ.com's Eliot Shorr-Parks mulled the somewhat attractive financial possibility of Mathews and Murray being shipped off:

Murray was the grander disappointment after signing a five-year, $42 million contract. He wasn't installed as the feature back by ousted head coach Chip Kelly and had 702 yards on only 3.8 yards per tote. It comes as little surprise he was dealt after only one season.

A change of scenery may be what Murray needs to thrive. The arrival of a new coaching staff led by Doug Pederson could have sparked a bounce-back year for Murray, but of course, that won't be the case anymore.

Shifty scatback Darren Sproles is entering a contract year, so no matter what the Eagles decide to do with Mathews, they may want to acquire backfield insurance through a free-agent bargain or at some point in the draft.
