WWE Week in Review: Who Received B/R's Top Awards for Week of March 4

Ryan DilbertMar 4, 2016

As March began, WWE's best moments came when wrestlers were asked to do what they do best.

WWE offered the ideal stages for Dean Ambrose, Stephanie McMahon and Finn Balor. And each of those performers nailed his or her opportunity, by leaning on unhinged energy, firing verbal bullets or mixing it up in the ring.

Monday's Raw was a letdown, but no one can blame McMahon or Ambrose. They both offered award-worthy performances on a dull night.

Over at NXT, Balor and Baron Corbin made impacts of their own.

Each of those wrestlers needs to clear a bit of space on his or her mantel. They, like Ambrose and McMahon, earned a Bleacher Report weekly award.

B/R's Top Moment of the Week: Stephanie McMahon Delivers Acceptance Speech

1 of 5

On an edition of Raw that dragged and meandered and failed to entertain for much of the night, Stephanie McMahon swooped in to save the show.

She issued a scathing speech about her brother Shane, snarling through most of it. McMahon's rage hooked the audience right away. She was simply captivating as she unraveled.

Rolling Stone's Kenny Herzog wrote, "Stephanie upstaged everyone last night, including her husband."

McMahon continues to prove that she's both one of the best actors in the company and one of its top talkers. That's why it's so frustrating when inconsistencies pop up in her character. Sometimes, she's the raving villain she was on Monday night, and at times, she plays more of a babyface role as the cheerleader for the Divas division.

This is the McMahon we need to see more of. This kind of performance is why she needs to be the center of her own narrative, not playing a supportive role in the story that is so focused on her brother, father and The Undertaker.

B/R's Standout NXT Star of the Week: Baron Corbin

2 of 5

Baron Corbin maximized his minutes as he mauled the newly arrived Austin Aries.

The Lone Wolf was only onscreen for a few moments, but his vicious attack and his staredown of William Regal afterward were eye-catching. He came off as a force of nature. The realism of the attack and the energy he inserted into this scene made it easy to anticipate what will come next.

This is what Corbin can be at his best—intense, overpowering, a beast.

He will soon get a shot at improving his resume when he steps into the ring with Aries at some point. The former TNA world champ is an elite in-ring performer. Facing him is a chance for Corbin to produce his best work to date.

B/R's Top Wrestler of the Week: Dean Ambrose

3 of 5

As Roman Reigns recovered from nasal surgery, Dean Ambrose made it clear that he's fully capable of thriving in a main event slot.

WWE showcased The Lunatic Fringe several times over. Each time out, he showed off how compelling he is.

He confronted Triple H in an intriguing opening segment on Monday's Raw. While it didn't click as much as one might have hoped, the exchange was entertaining, with Ambrose being both funny and threatening. And as Kevin Berge of Questionable Critics wrote, "Dean Ambrose can keep up with Triple H on the mic, which makes their encounters effective and heated."

Ambrose generated massive sympathy in the show's final moments, as he suffered a beating from Triple H and continued to fight on. Beaten up and barely able to move, Ambrose told his attacker, "Thanks, Hunter."

This all made it easy to anticipate the upcoming title match between him and The Game. He also makes it so easy to root for him, on Raw or at Roadblock.

He kicked off SmackDown with his usual off-kilter style and followed up with a fun collision with Kevin Owens in the show's main event.

At each stage, Ambrose was engaging. He's different, full of crackling energy and connecting with the fans in a big way.

This week was yet another success in a year that has belonged to Ambrose so far.

B/R's Top Under-the-Radar Move: Adding Bray Wyatt vs. Brock Lesnar to Roadblock

4 of 5

Bray Wyatt is now set to face Brock Lesnar at Roadblock. WWE made the announcement on SmackDown, not making nearly as much noise about it as it did after booking Triple H vs. Dean Ambrose.

With that clash on tap to go along with a WWE title match, Roadblock now feels like a far bigger event.

Pitting Lesnar against Wyatt allows WWE to avoid leaving a narrative unfinished. After The Wyatt Family ousted The Beast Incarnate from the Royal Rumble, there has been zero follow-up. Now, Lesnar gets a shot at vengeance as he marches into Wyatt's lair.

Wyatt will serve as a formidable foe for Lesnar, likely giving Paul Heyman's monster great momentum heading into WrestleMania. With the other members of The Wyatt Family at ringside, Lesnar can also create a lasting image of destruction should he lay one of them, or all of them, out.

As for The Eater of Worlds, he gets a shot in the spotlight against a top talent. With it looking like he will be left out of the WrestleMania mix, this is his chance to prove WWE foolish for not highlighting him more.

B/R's Top Match of the Week: Finn Balor vs. Neville

5 of 5

A meeting of NXT champions past and present lived up to all the hype as Finn Balor and Neville delivered a high-octane bout.

They began their fight on the mat and slowly built up to a climax brimming with aerial moves and electric energy. The fans ate it all up. Bryan Heaton of Daily DDT wrote, "The finishing sequence alone was enough to get a huge crowd at a college arena into the match, despite having sat through four hours to that point."

This is the kind of action that has defined NXT over the past two years. This is why WWE continues to stockpile top-notch performers in what isn't exactly a developmental brand anymore.

Bringing in Neville allowed him to get back to flourishing in the ring rather than floundering as an afterthought on the main roster. It offered Balor a fresh matchup and a top-flight opponent.

And it gave fans the most entertaining bit of wrestling on WWE TV this week.
