Lamar Miller Not Franchise-Tagged by Dolphins: Latest Details, Comments
The Miami Dolphins opted against using the franchise tag on running back Lamar Miller before Tuesday's deadline. He's now in line to become an unrestricted free agent if an extension isn't signed before the new NFL league year begins on March 9.
Adam Schefter of ESPN confirmed the Dolphins' decision not to tag Miller, which didn't come as much of a surprise.
Andrew Abramson of the Palm Beach Post reported last week that Miami general manager Chris Grier and Miller's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, were scheduled to meet at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis to discuss the situation.

Miller rushed for 872 yards and eight touchdowns during the 2015 season. He also added 47 catches for 397 yards and two scores as part of the team's passing attack.
New Dolphins head coach Adam Gase previously praised that all-around ability, per Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald:
Miller didn't think he received enough touches last season, though, averaging a shade over 15 touches per game. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald passed along comments the 24-year-old back made during an appearance on WQAM Radio last month.
"I want to be a featured back," Miller said. "I want the recognition I deserve."
Miller added that he wanted around 20 touches per contest.
Ultimately, it's hard to see that happening if he returns to Miami. The Dolphins will likely continue to lean on their Ryan Tannehill-led passing game, and they have another running back in Jay Ajayi who could receive a bigger role in 2016.
The team is currently $3.5 million over the top-51 cap, according to Spotrac. So money is also going to play a role, as well. Whether the sides will be able to find enough common ground to make it work before Miller hits the open market is now the key question.
If not, he should receive a fair amount of interest on the open market as a running back capable of filling just about any role. The Tennessee Titans and Dallas Cowboys are among the teams that could use a backfield upgrade this offseason.
