Chelsea Transfer News: Latest Rumours Linked to Guus Hiddink's Blues

Christopher SimpsonFeb 27, 2016

Chelsea have received a huge boost in their pursuit of Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain as the Argentinian reportedly won't be signing a new deal with the club.

That's according to Claudio Laudisa of Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Marc Williams of the Daily Star), which reported he is hoping to change clubs this summer after his relationship with the Napoli bosses broke down, with Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain leading the charge.

According to Transfermarkt, the 28-year-old has a contract until 2018, so the Blues may have to meet the £77 million release clause noted in Williams' report.

As Squawka Football and Opta Paolo reveal, the striker is having an incredible season and is accurate in front of goal:

Indeed, as football writer Adam Digby noted, Higuain scoring has become an expected occurrence in Serie A this year:

Here are some of his many impressive highlights:

Higuain brings more than just goals, though, as football writer David Amoyal stated earlier in the season:

Indeed, the centre-forward is unfortunate to have just two assists this season having created 36 chances, according to Squawka.

Chelsea are desperate for a quality alternative to Diego Costa and Higuain could provide just that. Whether his relationship at Napoli has broken down or not, after the season he's had he's sure to attract plenty of interest this summer, so it would hardly be a surprise for Chelsea to make him one of their top targets.

In other news, according to Heiko Ostendorp of German outlet Sport Bild (h/t Metro's George Bellshaw), Borussia Monchengladbach could be set to sign Blues defender Andreas Christensen—just over a quarter of the way through a two-year loan spell with the Bundesliga side—on a permanent deal for just under £12 million.

The 19-year-old has made 27 appearances for Gladbach this season including five in the Champions League, rapidly establishing himself as a key player.

According to Squawka, in 17 Bundesliga showings the centre-back has won 15 tackles and 45 aerial duels this season. He recently scored a brace in Gladbach's 5-1 win over Werder Bremen and drew plaudits from German football expert Archie Rhind-Tutt:

With captain John Terry set to depart Stamford Bridge, the Blues would do well to keep the highly promising Christensen as he is already proving to be an excellent defender.

Bellshaw believes Chelsea are "unlikely" to part with the youngster, but the Blues have a track record of letting top young talent slip through their fingers—for example Kevin De Bruyne, now at Manchester City via Wolfsburg—so it wouldn't be too surprising if they did let Christensen go.
