Chelsea Transfer News: Willian Contract Offered Amid PSG, Bayern Munich Rumours

Rory MarsdenFeb 23, 2016

Chelsea have reportedly offered Willian a new £120,000-a-week contract in an attempt to keep him at the club beyond the summer.

According to Matt Hughes in the Times, Chelsea are concerned about a player exodus at the end of the season if, as is highly likely, they fail to qualify for next term's UEFA Champions League, and the Blues have moved to secure Willian's future at the club.

Per Hughes, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Juventus have all "expressed interest" in Willian in the past, and they could move for the playmaker at the end of the season.

Chelsea are eager to tie Willian to the club, as he has been their star performer in a disappointing 2015-16 campaign, netting 10 goals and providing four assists in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup, per WhoScored.com.

Despite Chelsea's poor defence of their 2014-15 title this term, Willian has stood out in the English top flight and has been one of few bright lights for the west London outfit, per football writer Rupert Fryer:

The Blues paid £30 million to sign Willian from Anzhi Makhachkala in 2013, with the Brazil international signing a five-year deal up to 2018.

Per Simon Johnson in the Evening Standard, the 27-year-old's current deal at Stamford Bridge is worth around £80,000 a week, so Chelsea have offered him a substantial wage hike.

Chelsea will desperately hope that it is enough to keep him at the club, and he will likely be more inclined to remain in west London after their recent return to form.

Under interim manager Guus Hiddink—installed as Jose Mourinho's replacement in December—Chelsea have won six, drawn six and lost just once, their most recent result a resounding 5-1 FA Cup win over Manchester City, in which Willian netted.

Though they are still down in 12th in the Premier League, 14 points back from the fourth-placed Sky Blues, their recent endeavours have seen them return to the top 20 of Bleacher Report's European club rankings:

Chelsea's prospects have undoubtedly improved under Hiddink, and although Champions League qualification is highly unlikely, the Blues should be back among the title challengers again next season.

As such, Willian will surely be tempted into signing on to new and improved terms at Stamford Bridge, and Chelsea fans will be able to rest easy in the knowledge that their star man is going nowhere.
