Giroux To Undergo Surgery

Saturday, May 14

Flyers general manager Ron Hextall announced that Giroux, along with teammate Shayne Gostisbehere, will have surgery on May 17 to repair his right hip and a bilateral lower abdominal tear.

Giroux is expected to be able to get back to full hockey activity in 10-12 weeks, which would be toward the end of July or the beginning of August.

The Flyers captain led the team with 67 points and 45 assists to go along with 22 goals this season. His performance and leadership was a big reason why Philadelphia was able to turn around a 4-6-3 start under head coach Dave Hakstol and finish the season at 41-27-14 with 96 points.

It was good enough for them to earn the final Eastern Conference playoff spot before being bounced in six games by the Presidents' Trophy-winning Washington Capitals.

Durability has actually been a calling card for Giroux in recent years. He played in 78 games in 2015-16, 81 games last season and all 82 games in 2013-14, 2010-11 and 2009-10.

Outside of his durability, Giroux is one of the best players on the ice for the Flyers. He is electric in open space and consistently looks to push the puck into the offensive zone. He is versatile enough to play center and on the wing and can finish at the net or set up his teammates with timely passing.

While the injury is a lengthy one, the timing of it allows the 28-year-old to be able to come back and have a few months to prepare for his 10th NHL season.
