"German news outlet Bild claim [City] have lodged a £39 million bid for the 23-year-old," reported Alex Wood of the Daily Star. "The news could be a massive blow to Chelsea and Arsenal who have all been linked with the star by Bild."
The report also relayed previous comments from Xhaka, 23, in which he indicated he could be tempted by a move to the Sky Blues: "Logically, it is hard to say no when City wants you and you can play there. I will openly admit that and I'm sure that does not only apply to me. England is my dream. I do not hide it. Whether I’ll be happy there, only the good Lord knows."
He made further comments about his "dream" to move to the Premier League to Sky Sports in Germany, in which he threw some doubt on the possibility, per Sky Sports' James Walker-Roberts: "I think everybody has a dream. Everybody has a childhood dream and that's my childhood dream. If my dream comes true, it remains to be seen. At the moment I cannot say how realistic it is."
There is little doubt, though, that he is being eyed by major Premier League clubs, and he would be a fine addition in the English top flight.
Mature beyond his years—although he does need to work on his discipline, having been sent off three times this season in the Bundesliga, per WhoScored.com—he has made himself an invaluable part of Gladbach's first team.
Xhaka is already a very experienced Swiss international and was previously described by his former national team manager, Ottmar Hitzfeld, as a "young Bastian Schweinsteiger," per Walker-Roberts.
He is comfortable on the ball and has an enviable passing range, while his physicality and intelligence make him a force to be reckoned with both going forward and in a defensive capacity.
Xhaka is contracted at Borussia until 2019, meaning only a substantial offer will be enough to sign him, but given City's financial clout, they could well get themselves one of Europe's most talented young players.
